Le Moine (The Monk) est un roman anglais de l'écrivain Matthew Gregory Lewis, publié en 1796. Cette oeuvre de jeunesse, emblématique du roman gothique, aura une influence considérable. Il est traduit l'année suivante en français et fait l'objet d'adaptations au théâtre. Le succès est tel que de nombreuses imitations fleurissent, tant en Angleterre qu'en France. Parmi les oeuvres qui fleurissent autour du Moine un roman de Charlotte Dacre, que Swinburne estime proche des ouvrages de Sade, mérite l'attention tant pour son aspect novateur que pour ses qualités: Zofloya, ou le Maure[1]. Mathew Gregory Lewis a écrit ce roman en dix semaines avant l'âge de vingt ans, dans le but de divertir sa mère. Il est pourtant extrêmement subversif dans les thèmes abordés (viol, inceste, parricide, magie noire...) et critique à l'envi l'hypocrisie du monde religieux. Ce roman fut censuré à son époque et figure parmi les préférés du marquis de Sade. En France, en 1931, Antonin Artaud en publie une traduction très personnelle (Le Moine, de Lewis, raconté par Antonin Artaud) et envisage de l'adapter au cinéma. En 2012, Maurice Lévy propose une version revue, corrigée et annotée de la traduction originale de Léon de Wailly de 1840 aux éditions des Presses universitaires du Mirail. Matthew Gregory Lewis, né à Londres le 9 juillet 1775 et mort en mer le 14 mai 1818, est un romancier et dramaturge anglais, souvent désigné sous le nom du moine Lewis, en raison du succès de son roman gothique, Le Moine (The Monk) en 1796. Biographie Matthew Gregory Lewis étudie, en vue d'une carrière diplomatique, à la Westminster School et à Christ Church à Oxford, passant la plupart de ses vacances à l'étranger dans l'étude des langues modernes; en 1794, il se rend à La Haye comme attaché à l'ambassade britannique. Bien qu'il n'y reste que quelques mois, c'est là qu'il écrit, en dix semaines, son roman Ambroise, ou le Moine (Ambrosio, or the Monk), qui est publié pendant l'été, l'année suivante. Il obtient immédiatement un grand succès, mais certains passages sont d'une telle nature qu'un an après, le livre fait l'objet d'une injonction de restriction à la vente. Lewis publie une deuxième édition dont il a retranché tous les passages jugés répréhensibles, ce qui n'enlève rien au caractère terrifiant de l'ouvrage. Lord Byron, dans Bardes anglais et critiques écossais, écrit du merveilleux travail de Lewis, moine ou barde, qui ferait du Parnasse un cimetière; même le personnage de Satan pourrait redouter de demeurer en sa compagnie, et, dans son crâne, on discerne un enfer plus profond. Le Marquis de Sade fait aussi l'éloge de Lewis dans son essai Idée sur les romans (1800). Plus tard, les Romantiques, Hoffmann, Coleridge ou Victor Hugo y trouvèrent une source d'inspiration; Charles Dickens alla jusqu'à acheter le manuscrit aux enchères. André Breton en fit un modèle pour le surréalisme et Antonin Artaud en proposa une réécriture libre. Armand François Léon de Wailly (Paris, 28 juillet 1804 - Paris 25 avril 1864) est un romancier, auteur dramatique, adaptateur et traducteur français. Biographie Né dans un famille d'écrivains et universitaires, diplômé de l'École des chartes, il devient un grand ami d'Alfred de Vigny et travaille comme secrétaire de Sosthène de La Rochefoucauld au département des Beaux-Arts. Il se fait connaître par ses nombreuses traductions d'auteurs anglais (poésie) et sa collaboration avec P.-J. Stahl dans l'adaptation de classiques britanniques (dont William Shakespeare).
