About the Book

Malgré toutes les recherches consacrées aux Lumières françaises, il reste bien des trésors à découvrir, surtout si l'on pousse la prospection dans les terrains dédaignés (ou ignorés) par la 'grande' critique. Un trio singulier, en effet, que celui constitué de fait par le libraire et bibliographe Prosper Marchand (1678-1756), le publiciste Jean Rousset de Missy (1686-1762) et l'érudit mais besogneux touche-à-tout, Lambert Ignace Douxfils (1708-1753). Voilà trois hommes qui, durant quarante années, ont échangé une importante correspondance demeurée quasi inconnue jusqu'aujourd'hui. Les sujets abordés? Voltaire, pour lequel le trio éprouve une aversion peu commune, la mémoire vénérée de Jean-Baptiste Rousseau, la franc-maçonnerie, les événements politiques qui troublent les Provinces-Unies, l'histoire du livre (et les débuts de Marc-Michel Rey), la politique européenne, la liberté de conscience. Riches en allusions, ces lettres sont accompagnées de centaines de notes qui précisent le sens et éclairent les allusions. Ainsi se trouve démontée pour la première fois l'affaire des éditions pirates de l'Histoire universelle. Voltaire ne ment pas du tout lorsqu'il parle de son manuscrit volé, du rôle de Bruxelles, des manoeuvres de Néaulme. De même on connaît désormais les raisons de la disgrâce politique de Rousset de Missy et de l'espionnage de Versailles. Les troubles politiques de Hollande, les pourparlers internationaux, l'occupation française de la Belgique autrichienne apparaissent sous des jours nouveaux. La franc-maçonnerie est l'objet d'éloges et de combats chaleureux au nom de la liberté de conscience. L'écheveau des éditions posthumes de Jean-Baptiste Rousseau se trouve presqu'entièrement dénoué. A côté des fortes personnalités de ces trois compères, on voit se détacher un Voltaire vu par le petit bout de la lorgnette, Baculard d'Arnaud, l'ombre du 'grand Rousseau', le stadhouder Guillaume IV d'Orange, le jeune Marc-Michel Rey, le monde du livre et le quotidien de la vie hollandaise. La documentation rassemblée a permis de redresser bien des erreurs reçues, d'écrire enfin des notices bio-bibliographiques correctes et de mettre au jour des textes importants.
