Qui est mort sur une croix un vendredi, un vendredi 11 septembre ? Non, il ne s'agit pas de Jésus. Mais de Saint Jean-Gabriel Perboyre. Même si de nombreuses coïncidences avec la vie du Christ doivent être signalées...

Le Saint et Martyr du 11 septembre est lotois. En 1996, le pape Jean-Paul II l'a élevé à cette dignité. Le berger du Quercy ayant espéré mourir pour le Sauveur, sur une croix en Chine, pays alors interdit aux missionnaires, bénéficiait depuis le 10 novembre 1889 du grade de Bienheureux (béatifié par le Pape Léon XIII).
Je me suis installé dans le Lot en 1996. Je pense être le premier laïc à m'intéresser ainsi au parcours de ce presque voisin, né le 5 janvier (il prétendait le 6, jour de l'Épiphanie) 1802, au lieu-dit le Puech, dans la commune de Montgesty, à une vingtaine de kilomètres de Cahors.

388 pages. 48 photos, de vitraux (certains semblent être "inconnus"), statues...

Regard étonné d'un écrivain lotois sur un "martyr et saint" qui ne semble pas faire l'unanimité au sein de l'Église... ni dans le département... je l'ai découvert "par hasard", lors de mon travail de photographe axé sur les vitraux centenaires... Mais qui est cet homme sur une croix ? Bienheureux Perboyre. Le plus souvent les écriteaux, naturellement sur les vitraux mais également sous les statues, n'ont pas été actualisés...

Je suis parti à la recherche, des vitraux, des écrits. Et il m'a semblé nécessaire, en plus de ma modeste contribution, de présenter la manière dont il fut perçu, de son décès le 11 septembre 1840 à ce jour. Naturellement dans le respect du droit d'auteur... Ces documents, avant d'être édités, avaient reçu l'aval des autorités religieuses. Mon travail fut totalement indépendant. Je voulais comprendre comment un gamin d'ici en arrive à souhaiter mourir sur une croix, au nom de sa foi, sur des terres infidèles
La consultation d'une cinquantaine de ses lettres, principalement à ses frères, son oncle et son père apportent un éclairage encore plus précieux.

Deux siècles plus tard, quels enseignements nous communiquent son expérience ?...

P.S. 2: L'église St-Urcisse de Cahors, fermée au public, possède, en plus de statues, un vitrail représentant Jean-Gabriel Perboyre. Aucun de nos grands services (municipaux, départementaux, régionaux) n'avait réussi à identifier le maître-verrier l'ayant réalisé.
