Kit, pendant les événements qui ont rempli les quinze derniers chapitres, s'était, comme on pense, familiarisé de plus en plus avec M. et mistress Garland, M. Abel, le poney, Barbe, et peu à peu il en était venu à les considérer tous, tant les uns que les autres, comme ses amis particuliers, et Abel-Cottage comme sa propre maison. Halte! Puisque ces lignes sont écrites, je ne les effacerai pas mais si elles donnaient à croire que Kit, dans sa nouvelle demeure où il avait trouvé bonne table et bon logis, commença à penser avec dédain à la mauvaise chère et au pauvre mobilier de son ancienne maison, elles répondraient mal à notre pensée, tranchons le mot, elles seraient injustes. Qui, mieux que Kit, se fût souvenu de ceux qu'il avait laissés dans cette maison, bien que ce ne fussent qu'une mère et deux jeunes enfants? Quel père vantard eût, dans la plénitude de son coeur, raconté plus de hauts faits de son enfant prodige, que Kit ne manquait d'en raconter chaque soir à Barbe, au sujet du petit Jacob? Et même, s'il eût été possible d'en croire les récits qu'il faisait avec tant d'emphase, y eut-il jamais une mère comme la mère de Kit, du moins au témoignage de son fils, ou bien y eut-il jamais autant d'aisance au sein même de la pauvreté, que dans la pauvreté de la famille de Kit? Arrêtons-nous ici un instant pour faire remarquer que, si le dévouement et l'affection domestique sont toujours une chose charmante, nulle part ils n'offrent plus de charme que chez les pauvres gens, les liens terrestres qui attachent à leur famille les riches et les orgueilleux sont trop souvent de mauvais aloi; mais ceux qui attachent le pauvre à son humble foyer sont de bon métal, et portent l'estampille du ciel. L'homme qui descend de noble race aime les murailles et les terres de son héritage comme une partie de lui-même, comme des insignes de sa naissance et de son autorité; son union avec elles est l'union triomphale de l'orgueil et de la richesse. L'attachement du pauvre à la terre qu'il tient à ferme, que des étrangers ont occupée avant lui, et que d'autres occuperont peut-être demain, a des racines plus profondes et qui descendent plus avant dans un sol plus pur. Ses biens de famille sont de chair et de sang; aucun alliage d'argent ou d'or ne s'y mêle; il n'y entre pas de pierres précieuses; le pauvre n'a pas d'autre propriété que les affections de son coeur; et lorsque, mal vêtu, mal nourri, accablé de travail, il est forcé de se tenir sur un sol froid, entre des murailles nues, cet homme reçoit directement de Dieu lui-même l'amour qu'il éprouve pour sa maison, et ce lieu de souffrance devient pour lui un asile sacré.
