Quoique je sois vieux, la nuit est généralement le temps où je me plais à me promener. Souvent, dans l'été, je quitte mon logis dès l'aube du matin, et j'erre tout le long du jour par les champs et les ruelles écartées, ou même je m'échappe durant plusieurs journées ou plusieurs semaines de suite; mais, à moins que je ne sois à la campagne, je ne sors guère qu'après le soleil couché, bien que, grâce au ciel, j'aime autant que toute autre créature vivante ses rayons et la douce gaieté dont ils animent la terre. Cette habitude, je l'ai insensiblement contractée; d'abord, parce qu'elle est favorable à mon infirmité[2], et ensuite parce qu'elle me fournit le meilleur moyen d'établir mes observations sur le caractère et les occupations des gens qui remplissent les rues. L'éblouissement de l'heure de midi, le va-et-vient confus qui règne alors, conviendraient mal à des investigations paresseuses comme les miennes: à la clarté d'un réverbère, ou par l'ouverture d'une boutique, je saisis un trait des figures qui passent devant moi, et cela sert mieux mon dessein que de les contempler en pleine lumière: pour dire vrai, la nuit est plus favorable à cet égard que le jour, qui, trop fréquemment, détruit, sans souci ni cérémonie, un château bâti en l'air, au moment où on va l'achever. N'est-ce pas un miracle que les habitants des rues étroites puissent supporter ces allées et venues continuelles, ce mouvement qui n'a jamais de halte, cet incessant frottement de pieds sur les dures pierres du pavé qui finissent par en devenir polies et luisantes! Songez à un pauvre malade, sur une place telle que Saint-Martin's Court, écoutant le bruit des pas, et, au sein de sa peine et de sa souffrance, obligé, malgré lui, comme si c'était une tâche qu'il dût remplir, de distinguer le pas d'un enfant de celui d'un homme, le mendiant en savates de l'élégant, bien botté, le flâneur de l'affairé, la démarche pesante du pauvre paria qui erre à l'aventure, de l'allure rapide de l'homme qui court à la recherche du plaisir; songez au bourdonnement, au tumulte dont les sens du malade sont constamment accablés; songez à ce courant de vie sans aucun temps d'arrêt, et qui va, va, va, tombant à travers ses rêves troublés, comme s'il était condamné à se voir couché mort, mais ayant conscience de son état, dans un cimetière bruyant, sans pouvoir espérer de repos pour les siècles à venir! Ainsi, quand la foule passe et repasse sans cesse sur les ponts, du moins sur ceux qui sont libres de tout droit de péage, dans les belles soirées, les uns s'arrêtent à regarder nonchalamment couler l'eau avec l'idée vague qu'elle coulera tout à l'heure entre de verts rivages qui s'élargiront de plus en plus, jusqu'à ce qu'ils se confondent avec la mer; les autres se soulagent du poids de leurs lourds fardeaux et pensent, en regardant par-dessus le parapet, que vivre, c'est fumer et goûter un plein farniente, et que le comble du bonheur consiste à dormir au soleil sur un morceau de voile goudronnée, au fond d'une barque étroite et immobile, d'autres, enfin, et c'est une classe toute différente, déposent là des fardeaux bien autrement lourds, se rappelant avoir entendu dire, ou avoir quelque part lu dans le passé, que se noyer n'est pas une mort cruelle, mais, de tous les moyens de suicide, le plus facile et le meilleur.
