About the Book

Le Magasin d'antiquités, en anglais The Old Curiosity Shop, est, avec Barnaby Rudge, l'un des deux romans que Charles Dickens (1812-1870) a publiés, en compagnie de quelques nouvelles, dans son anecdotique et éphémère revue L'Horloge de Maître Humphrey, parue de 1840 à 1841, puis en un volume en 1841. Master Humphrey est censé être le narrateur des premiers chapitres, puis l'histoire est confiée à une autre voix, sans solution de continuité entre l'une et l'autre. Il concerne la jeune Nell Trent (la petite Nell) qui vit avec son grand-père maternel, dont le nom n'est jamais révélé, dans une vieille maison de Londres appelée The Old Curiosity Shop, car elle comprend en rez-de-chaussée un magasin d'antiquités bourré, selon Gilbert Keith Chesterton, d' objets grotesques et sinistres, d'armes bizarres, de décorations en volutes diaboliques . Centrée sur les deux protagonistes, le grand-père et la petite-fille, l'intrigue est d'abord marquée par le mystère. Pourquoi cette situation ? Pourquoi l'absence du vieil homme pendant la nuit ? Bientôt, cependant, le voile se déchire avec l'intervention de plus en plus appuyée du nain Daniel Quilp, aussi difforme d'aspect que roué et cruel de tempérament. Divers comparses prennent également substance, soit du côté du couple des protagonistes, soit de celui de ses persécuteurs. Jusqu'au jour où, par une décision dont l'enfant a l'idée, l'intrigue s'ouvre brusquement sur le monde et bascule dans le champ du picaresque, avec l'errance, l'aventure de la route, les rencontres inopinées. Dès lors, le pathos, déjà appuyé dans la première partie, s'amplifie jusqu'à devenir extrême, Dickens ayant, sans rémission possible, fondé son histoire sur le sort pitoyable d'une orpheline et d'un vieillard, qui plus est en situation de faiblesse et en butte à l'adversité, les deux suscitées par la convoitise et la concupiscence des plus vils. La mort de la petite Nell, bientôt suivie de celle de son grand-père, reste l'un des événements les plus célèbres de la fiction anglaise; à l'époque de la parution des feuilletons, elle a suscité une vague de réactions jusqu'alors inédite: des milliers de lecteurs, des hommes semble-t-il, ont imploré Dickens de garder l'enfant en vie, puis des milliers d'autres ont exprimé leur deuil de sa disparition qui a pris l'envergure d'une catastrophe nationale.
