En est la cause le triste destin d'un homme trop vite monte et tres vite descendu sur l'echelle des promotions sociales. Fils et petit-fils de notaires et secretaires du roi, Jean de Montaigu est de ces conseillers dont Charles V sait s'entourer, de ces hommes de confiance qu'emploie pendant la minorite de Charles VI le gouvernement des ducs ses oncles, de ces Marmousets que Charles VI place dans les principales fonctions du pouvoir quand en 1388 il remercie ses oncles. Comme d'autres, il en profite pour constituer une enorme fortune, et la fondation de Marcoussis s'inscrit naturellement dans les manifestations de cette fortune. Mais la fortune engendre les haines. Grand maOEtre de l'Hotel, capitaine de la Bastille puis capitaine de Paris, Montaigu ne peut eviter de se ranger dans l'un des camps qui s'affrontent alors. Fidele d'Orleans, il sera l'une des premieres victimes du retour au pouvoir du duc de Bourgogne. D'abord decapite, il est pendu a Montfaucon en octobre 1409. Marcoussis aurait pu etre la necropole d'un grand lignage. Ce ne sera que la tombe d'une victime de la guerre civile. Meme si la decouverte de l'obituaire de Marcoussis a la Bibliotheque de Munich est le fait du hasard, elle est aussi le fruit d'une longue et scrupuleuse attention de M. Jean-Loup Lemaitre a ces textes dans lesquels l'historien discerne le reflet complexe de l'histoire et des interets spirituels ou temporels de l'etablissement. Il convient, tout d'abord, de l'en feliciter. Et l'on doit se rejouir de voir aujourd'hui publie un obituaire dont le caractere tardif implique une sedimentation des obligations et des devotions. Avant de retracer les grandes lignes de cette histoire qui ne serait qu'une anecdote si elle n'etait decisive pour le couvent de Marcoussis, M. Lemaitre montre bien, et on ne peut que l'en remercier, ce qu'a ete dans la France du XIVe siecle l'emergence de l'ordre des celestins, dont on sait a quel point la maison parisienne a ete favorisee par les Valois, surtout par les Orleans, en peine de se doter d'une necropole pour n'etre pas debiteurs d'une place mediocre a Saint-Denis. Il en resulte que l'obituaire n'est pas celui de n'importe quelle fondation pieuse. A l'arriere-plan de sa composition, il y a des ambitions et un destin brise. Mais il faut remarquer qu'en 1539 la maison est assez forte et assez fiere de son histoire pour se doter de ce Livre du chapitre dont le propos depasse largement celui des simples obituaires que tenaient les autres couvents de celestins. Le calendrier, le martyrologe et le rituel de profession en sont assez originaux pour que l'editeur en procure une analyse fine, qui met en evidence, sauf dans le rituel, le particularisme des celestins, notamment dans les emprunts a l'Italie et la mediocrite des emprunts aux usages de Paris et de l'OEle-de-France. L'obituaire copie au XVIe siecle a ete complete jusqu'au suivant par les obits que la piete des fideles avait continue de fonder. On se felicite des notices biographiques et genealogiques par lesquelles M. Lemaitre eclaire les mentions succinctes qui sont de regle dans les textes de la sorte.
