Nous en serions réduits a faire comme les animaux, c'est-a-dire a apprendre seulement par imitation et nous serions dans l'impossibilité de partager nos idées avec nos semblables.Le problème de l'origine du langage préoccupe les penseurs depuis la plus haute antiquité; les solutions qu'ils nous proposent se ramènent a deux théories principales: émotive et imitative. Selon la théorie émotive, le langage proviendrait d'exclamations involontaires. Il arrive à tous de laisser échapper un cri de douleur comme Aie, ou d'admiration: oh !, ou encore d'exaspération: Aaaah ! .Si la théorie émotive est juste, de telles interjections représentent les premiers mots connus et tous les autres en découlent.La théorie imitative, d'autre part, suppose que les mots primitifs d'autre part, supposent que les mots primitifs avaient une valeur de reproduction, évoquant les sons que l'homme entendait autour de lui. Nous avons en français des onomatopées (du grec onomatopée, création de mot), c'est-à-dire des mots imitatifs comme miaou pour reproduire le cri du chat; ouf-ouf, l'aboiement du chien; tch-tch-ff, le bruit de la locomotive; ding-ding-dong, le son de la cloche. Selon la théorie imitative, c'est a partir de mots comme ceux-là que les hommes auraient forme les premiers noms de choses.La théories émotive ne saurait rendre compte de l'origine du langage .Le cri involontaire est un reflexe de l'organisme réagissant a l'action d'un fort stimulus: grimacer de douleur est un reflexe, mais ni la grimace ni le cri ne sont les manifestations d'une idée consciente. De toute façon, le nombre de cris involontaires est trop restreint pour expliquer le développement de milliers de mots. La théorie imitative est également insuffisante car elle néglige l'aspect subjectif des sensations .Proposez a dix personnes d'imiter un son donne; Vous obtiendrez comme résultat dix reproductions différentes.En réalité, que sont les mots des langages ? ce sont a la fois des interjections: Aie ! oh ! Ah !; des onomatopées: miaou, ding-ding-dong; des symboles qui nous semblent parfois arbitraires: il n'existe, par exemple aucun rapport entre les sons du mot cheval, et l'animal désigne par ce nom en français, en Allemand pferd, en anglais horse.Mais si ces mots sont aujourd'hui compris par tous - pour designer cheval, par exemple, en quelque langue que ce soit- c'est qu'ils sont le produit de conventions acceptées au cours des âges. En effet, si chacun de nous décidait de designer le cheval d'une manière différente, nous ne comprendrions pas des que nous parlerions de cheval. Cela vaut pour tous les mots.L'humanité possède donc un outil d'une merveilleuse efficacité le langage. Grace à lui, l'homme peut agir, en collaboration avec ses semblables, en communiquant avec eux.
