Il imite l'homme, son frère. Il faut s'enfoncer maintenant sous la grande forêt, dans cette région vierge des Laurentides, immense et tourmentée comme une mer en fureur; dans cette région de montagnes ombreuses et de crêtes scalpées, qui viennent brusquement s'arrêter au grand fleuve, et lui faire un rempart crénelé qui déchire la nue. On escalade les rochers, on franchit les torrents, on dort sur la dure, on est poursuivi par une légion de moustiques qui chantent, vibrante et claire comme un verre qui se brise, leur monotone chanson, nous embrassent effrontément un peu partout, et, comme le "kissing bug" dont ils devraient au moins imiter la pudeur, ils gorgent ensuite de notre sang le plus pur. Mais quel paysage merveilleux ! Quel air vivifiant ! Quelle senteur enivrante et douce ! Quel calme endormeur et profond ! Partout des lacs bleus comme le ciel baignent le pied des montagnes; partout des rivières serpentent dans les vallées; partout des cimes provoquent les mordants baisers de la foudre; partout des collines se couronnent de grands bouleaux rouges et de sapins odorants. Et, dans la suprême tranquillité de la solitude, on entend le bruissement d'une feuille, le murmure d'une source, le chant d'un oiseau. Seulement, quand la tempête arrive, les torrents mugissent, les arbres tombent, les lacs écument, les flots bondissent, la nue éclate et le tonnerre roule de montagne en montagne avec un fracas épouvantable. Nous revenions, un jour, cinq ou six amis, de l'une de ces intéressantes excursions de pêche en pays sauvage. Nous commencions à descendre le Cap Tourmente. À nos pieds, l'île d'Orléans, avec ses florissantes paroisses, semblait une corbeille de fleurs bercée par les eaux; Québec, sur son rocher noir, à trente milles de distance, luisait comme un astre nouveau dans les fauves lueurs du couchant, et toute la côte de Beaupré, qui descend des montagnes vers le fleuve par échelons merveilleusement taillés dans la forêt, la verdure et le roc, avec ses champs encadrés de clôtures grises, ses prairies et ses pièces de grain, paraissait dormir sous un voile de satin moiré, sous un voile tissé en larges carreaux bruns et verts, oranges et safrans, où les coteaux formaient des replis moelleux et les ruisseaux, des fils d'argent. La vue des pâturages verts et des troupeaux beuglants réveilla, dans nos gorges sèches, la soif du lait, et nous nous arrêtâmes devant une maison de bonne apparence, flanquée d'une laiterie de pierre. Un vieillard à l'oeil vif fumait sa pipe à la porte, du côté du soleil. Il se leva, nous pria d'entrer et vint s'asseoir avec nous. À peine avions-nous vidé le petit verre de politesse, qu'un bambin joufflu se précipita sur le seuil. - Grand-père, cria-t-il, il y a des animaux dans le grain ! - Oui-dà ! On va voir... Excusez-moi, mes bons messieurs, fit le vieillard. Et il s'élança dehors, sauta d'un bond, une clôture de cinq perches, enjamba un large fossé, et tomba soudain, après une vaillante course, au milieu des délinquants qui se délectaient du fruit défendu.
