About the Book

Le Grand Meaulnes est l'unique roman d'Alain-Fournier, publié en 1913. Son auteur, étant mort pour la France en 1914, a bénéficié des prorogations de guerre, et le roman n'est tombé dans le domaine public qu'en septembre 2009. Résumé Le roman retrace l'histoire d'Augustin Meaulnes, racontée par son ancien camarade de classe, François Seurel, devenu son ami. François Seurel et Augustin Meaulnes sont tous deux écoliers dans un petit village de Sologne près de Vierzon. Lors d'une escapade, Augustin Meaulnes arrive par hasard dans un domaine mystérieux où se déroule une fête étrange et poétique, pleine d'enfants. Le château est bruissant de jeux, de danses et de mascarades. Meaulnes apprend que cette fête est donnée à l'occasion des noces de Frantz de Galais. Parmi les festivités, des promenades en barque sur un lac sont offertes aux convives; Meaulnes y rencontre une jeune fille dont il tombe instantanément amoureux. Il ne fait cependant que la croiser et n'a plus l'occasion de la revoir. La fiancée tant attendue s'est enfuie, le mariage n'a finalement pas lieu et la fête prend tristement fin. Revenu à sa vie d'écolier, Meaulnes n'a plus qu'une idée en tête: retrouver le domaine mystérieux et la jeune femme qu'il aime. Ses recherches restent infructueuses. Les deux garçons font la connaissance du bohémien qui leur avoue être Frantz de Galais et leur fait promettre de faire revenir sa fiancée disparue. Meaulnes s'en va étudier à Paris mais en vérité c'est pour retrouver Yvonne. Les mois passent et François n'a plus de nouvelle de son ami. C'est par hasard que son ami Seurel, devenu instituteur, retrouve la piste de la jeune dame, Yvonne de Galais, la soeur de Frantz, dont le Grand Meaulnes est toujours amoureux. Il retrouve Meaulnes et le prévient de la nouvelle. Les deux jeunes gens se retrouvent alors et ils savent qu'ils sont toujours amoureux l'un de l'autre. Meaulnes demande en mariage Yvonne qui accepte et ils se marient. Pourtant le lendemain du mariage, Meaulnes s'en va sans laisser de nouvelles. François décide de s'occuper d' Yvonne, devenu une amie proche et du père de celle-ci. Quelques mois passent et Meaulnes ne revient pas, sans nouvelles. Yvonne apprend à François qu'elle est enceinte de Meaulnes. François décide donc de s'occuper d'elle en attendant le retour de son mari. François découvre alors les carnets de Meaulnes où il explique être parti pour aller retrouver Yvonne mais aussi la fiancée de Frantz. L'accouchement ne se passe pas très bien et le bébé se retrouve déformé. Yvonne fait une embolie pulmonaire et meurt. François l'amène jusqu'à son cercueil. Le père d' Yvonne meurt quelques mois après et François devient l'héritier. Il s'occupe de la petite fille jusqu'à ses 1 ans. Meaulnes revient alors et apprend la nouvelle. Il serre sa petite fille dans ses bras et quand François passe devant la maison, il voit Frantz et sa fiancée.

    A Thrilling But Totally Believable Murder Mystery

    Read this in one evening. I had planned to do other things with my day, but it was impossible to put down. Every time I tried, I was drawn back to it in less than 5 minutes. I sobbed my eyes out the entire last 100 pages. Highly recommend!
