Le Grand Meaulnes est un roman d'Alain-Fournier publié en 1913 chez Émile-Paul Frères. Il avait été auparavant publié en feuilleton dans la NRF de juillet à octobre 1913.


Résumé du roman:

Le texte qui suit est extrait du résumé que Jacques Rivière a proposé à ses auditeurs, dans la conférence qu'il a prononcée à Genève en 1918 sur Le Grand Meaulnes.

  • François, 15 ans, est le narrateur du livre. Il est le fils de M. et Mme Seurel, enseignants à Sainte Agathe en Sologne et étudient là-bas pour devenir enseignant. Augustin Meaulnes, 17 ans, arrive à l'académie.
  • Son arrivée va onduler l'existence tranquille et solitaire de François. "L'arrivée d'Augustin Meaulnes est pour moi le début d'un reportage", écrit François. Augustin, aimé "Le Grand Meaulnes" par les autres étudiants, brise l'unisson du soulèvement puriste et fascine les étudiants par sa distinction ésotérique.

Un roman d'aventure, un roman d'amitié

Meaulnes, pour la première fois, regardait en plein jour l'intérieur de la propriété. Les vestiges d'un mur séparaient le jardin délabré de la cour, où l'on avait, depuis peu, versé du sable et passé le râteau. À l'extrémité des dépendances qu'il habitait, c'étaient des écuries bâties dans un amusant désordre, qui multipliait les recoins garnis d'arbrisseaux fous et de vigne vierge. Jusque sur le domaine déferlaient des bois de sapins qui le cachaient à tout le pays plat, sauf vers l'est, où l'on apercevait des collines bleues couvertes de rochers et de sapins encore.

A propos d'Alain-Fournier:

  • Alain-Fournier, pseudonyme d'Henri-Alban Fournier, né le 3 octobre 1886 à La Chapelle-d'Angillon dans le Cher et tué au combat le 22 septembre 1914 (à 27 ans) à Saint-Remy-la-Calonne, est un écrivain français, dont l'oeuvre la plus célèbre est Le Grand Meaulnes (1913).
Personnages principaux
  1. Augustin Meaulnes, 17 ans, grand et mystérieux, aime l'aventure. Admiré par ses camarades de classe, il les emmène dans les rues du bourg après les cours.
  2. François Seurel, 15 ans, le narrateur du roman, est le seul ami de Meaulnes. C'est un adolescent calme et posé. Ses deux parents sont instituteurs dans l'école où il étudie. Moins téméraire, il accompagne néanmoins Meaulnes dans sa quête du domaine perdu.
  3. Yvonne de Galais, la belle du domaine perdu, deviendra l'épouse d'Augustin et la mère de leur petite fille.
  4. M. de Galais, le vieux père d'Yvonne et Frantz de Galais, est ruiné après l'échec du mariage de son fils.
  5. Frantz de Galais est le prétendant de Valentine Blondeau. Selon Yvonne de Galais, sa soeur, il est casse-cou et insouciant.
  6. Valentine Blondeau est la fiancée perdue, puis l'épouse de Frantz à la fin du roman.
