Le Feu (sous-titré Journal d'une escouade) est un roman de guerre autobiographique d'Henri Barbusse paru sous forme de feuilleton dans le quotidien L'OEuvre à partir du 3 août 1916, puis intégralement à la fin de novembre 1916 aux éditions Flammarion. Il reçoit la même année le Prix Goncourt. Ce livre que Barbusse, engagé volontaire en 1914 (il avait alors 41 ans et souffrait de problèmes pulmonaires), tira de son expérience personnelle du front, a été longuement mûri et pensé en première ligne pendant vingt-deux mois dans les tranchées de décembre 1914 à 1916. Barbusse tout au long de l'année 1915 tient un carnet de guerre où il note des expériences vécues, les expressions des poilus, et dresse des listes diverses et variées. Ce carnet servira de base à la composition de son roman dont l'essentiel de l'écriture l'occupera durant le premier semestre 1916 alors qu'il est convalescent à l'hôpital de Chartres puis à celui de Plombières[1]. Le roman est découpé en vingt-quatre chapitres, qui paraissent d'abord sous forme de feuilleton dans le quotidien L'oeuvre, avant d'être publié par les éditions Flammarion en novembre de la même année et d'obtenir, quelques jours plus tard, le prix Goncourt.

Il est issu d'une famille protestante d'origine cévenole (attestée au XVIIe siècle) dans un hameau d'Anduze, près d'Alès. Le milieu littéraire le reconnaît très jeune comme l'un des siens à la suite de sa participation remarquée au concours de poésie de L'Écho de Paris de Catulle Mendès. Son premier recueil de poèmes, Pleureuses, est publié en 1895 (réédité en 1920). Il s'exerce alors professionnellement dans la presse, se tourne vers la prose et publie un premier roman, empreint de décadence et de naturalisme à la fois: L'Enfer, en 1908. En 1914, âgé de 41 ans et malgré des problèmes pulmonaires, il s'engage volontairement dans l'infanterie (malgré ses positions pacifiques d'avant-guerre) et réussit à rejoindre les troupes combattantes en décembre 1914 au 231e régiment d'infanterie avec lequel il participe aux combats en premières lignes jusqu'en 1916[3]. La postérité se souviendra surtout du roman qu'il écrivit sur cette expérience Le Feu, prix Goncourt 1916, récit sur la Première Guerre mondiale dont le réalisme souleva les protestations du public de l'arrière autant que l'enthousiasme de ses camarades de combat. En 1917, il sera cofondateur et premier président de l'Association républicaine des anciens combattants (ARAC). Il adhère au Parti communiste français en 1923 et se lie d'amitié avec Lénine et Gorki. En 1928 il fonde la revue Monde (publié jusqu'en 1935) avec des collaborations mondiales prestigieuses.
