Si vous cherchez sur une carte des Flandres, ancienne ou moderne, la petite ville de Quiquendone, il est probable que vous ne l'y trouverez pas. Quiquendone est-elle donc une cité disparue? Non. Une ville à venir? Pas davantage. Elle existe, en dépit des géographies, et cela depuis huit à neuf cents ans. Elle compte même deux mille trois cent quatre-vingt-treize âmes, en admettant une âme par chaque habitant. Elle est située à treize kilomètres et demi dans le nord-ouest d'Audenarde et à quinze kilomètres un quart dans le sud-est de Bruges, en pleine Flandre. Le Vaar, petit affluent de l'Escaut, passe sous ses trois ponts, encore recouverts d'une antique toiture du moyen âge, comme à Tournay. On y admire un vieux château, dont la première pierre fut posée, en 1197, par le comte Baudouin, futur empereur de Constantinople, et un hôtel de ville à demi-fenêtres gothiques, couronné d'un chapelet de créneaux, que domine un beffroi à tourelles, élevé de trois cent cinquante-sept pieds au-dessus du sol. On y entend, à chaque heure, un carillon de cinq octaves, véritable piano aérien, dont la renommée surpasse celle du célèbre carillon de Bruges. Les étrangers-s'il en est jamais venu à Quiquendone-ne quittent point cette curieuse ville sans avoir visité sa salle des stathouders, ornée du portrait en pied de Guillaume de Nassau par Brandon; le jubé de l'église Saint-Magloire, chef-d'oeuvre de l'architecture du XVIe siècle; le puits en fer forgé qui se creuse au milieu de la grande place Saint-Ernuph, dont l'admirable ornementation est due au peintre-forgeron Quentin Metsys; le tombeau élevé autrefois à Marie de Bourgogne, fille de Charles le Téméraire, qui repose maintenant dans l'église de Notre-Dame de Bruges, etc. Enfin, Quiquendone a pour principale industrie la fabrication des crèmes fouettées et des sucres d'orge sur une grande échelle. Elle est administrée de père en fils depuis plusieurs siècles par la famille van Tricasse! Et pourtant Quiquendone ne figure pas sur la carte des Flandres! Est-ce oubli des géographes, est-ce omission volontaire? C'est ce que je ne puis vous dire; mais Quiquendone existe bien réellement avec ses rues étroites, son enceinte fortifiée, ses maisons espagnoles, sa halle et son bourgmestre, -à telles enseignes qu'elle a été récemment le théâtre de phénomènes surprenants, extraordinaires, invraisemblables autant que véridiques, et qui vont être fidèlement rapportés dans le présent récit.
