About the Book

English summary: Alain Boureau explores the significance of vows for medieval society and the questions that surround them. Should the Church be unified through the vows of its monks and clerics, or should difference be accepted? Do the vows of the Crusade supersede individual and national needs? The thirteenth century saw violent debates concerning the legal and theological aspects of vows, debates that would continue until Martin Luther sought to end them altogether.
