Biographie Né à Coteau-du-Lac en 1884, il étudie à partir de 1897 au séminaire de Valleyfield (il aurait d'ailleurs suivi les enseignements de Lionel Groulx) mais doit abandonner ses études en 1902. Il devient reporter pour La Presse en 1903 et 1904 et publie sous le pseudonyme de Pierre Beaudry . De 1904 à 1908, il est courriériste parlementaire, reporter politique et rédacteur au journal Le Canada. En 1908, il devient le directeur du Nationaliste. En 1909, il subit un procès et fait un séjour en prison. Il collabore ensuite avec La Patrie et Le Devoir. Mon encrier, un de ses articles les plus célèbres, est publié en première page du premier numéro du Devoir. Le texte débute ainsi: C'est un bel encrier tout flambant neuf, rempli jusqu'au bord de bonne encre fraîche et claire. Oh ! le merveilleux liquide ! Comme il fera d'agréables éclaboussures sur de certains visages ! - Jules Fournier, Le Devoir, 10 janvier 1910. En avril 1911, il fonde l'hebdomadaire L'Action, publié jusqu'en 1916. Son style polémique lui vaut les reproches de Louis-Alexandre Taschereau et d'Adélard Turgeon. Ses collègues de l'époque font remarquer qu'il n'était pas comme les autres journalistes canadiens, tirant ses inspirations des classiques français. Libéral sans être anticlérical, son confrère Olivar Asselin le compare à Arthur Buies. Le 22 avril 1912, il épouse Thérèse Surveyer. En 1917, il devient traducteur au Sénat canadien. Il meurt en 1918, à Ottawa, d'une pneumonie, à l'âge de trente-trois ans. Le littérateur Berthelot Brunet le classe parmi les meilleurs journalistes canadiens. Il admirait le journaliste français Henri Rochefort. Le prix Jules-Fournier est remis en son honneur par le Conseil de la langue française. Une biographie de Jules Fournier a été écrite par Adrien Thério en 1954 et une autre par Alonzo Leblanc en 1980. Résumé Jules Fournier n'a écrit qu'un seul roman, Le crime de Lachine. Il en a fait la rédaction, comme il le dit lui-même dans la préface, en une semaine, soit du 19 au 26 décembre 1904, alors qu'il n'a que vingt ans. Il destinait cette oeuvre pour une collection de livres à dix sous, mais par la suite la céda au journal Le Canada qui le servit en feuilleton à ses lecteurs, un an plus tard, du 23 décembre 1905 au 18 janvier 1906. Le roman ne parut jamais en volume par la suite. Voici la première édition. Extrait: Son père semble maintenant revenu des mauvais sentiments qu'il eut à son égard. La perte de Georges, la maladie, puis d'autres épreuves encore l'ont porté à réfléchir, on dirait. Et il paraît aujourd'hui avoir le remords de ses anciennes actions, -- de la conduite qu'il eut si longtemps envers son jeune fils -- le meilleur, il s'en aperçoit enfin. Il ne lui parle plus, comme autrefois, avec injures. On dirait, à certains gestes, à certaines intonations, qu'il se sent gêné en présence de Maurice, qu'il a envie de lui demander pardon de ses longues et cruelles injustices.
