Pendant un voyage à pied que je fis l'été dernier, à travers un ou deux des comtés riverains de New-York, je me trouvai, à la tombée du jour, passablement intrigué relativement à la route que je suivais. Le sol était singulièrement ondulé; et, depuis une heure, le chemin, comme s'il voulait se maintenir à l'intérieur des vallées, décrivait des sinuosités si compliquées, qu'il m'était actuellement impossible de deviner dans quelle direction était situé le joli village de B..., où j'avais décidé de passer la nuit. Le soleil avait à peine brillé, strictement parlant, pendant la journée, qui pourtant avait été cruellement chaude. Un brouillard fumeux, ressemblant à celui de l'été indien, enveloppait toutes choses et ajoutait naturellement à mon incertitude. À vrai dire, je ne m'inquiétais pas beaucoup de la question. Si je ne tombais pas sur le village avant le coucher du soleil, ou même avant la nuit, il était plus que possible qu'une petite ferme hollandaise, ou quelque bâtiment du même genre, se montrerait bientôt à mes yeux, quoique, dans toute la contrée avoisinante, en raison peut-être de son caractère plus pittoresque que fertile, les habitations fussent, en somme, très-clair-semées. À tout hasard, la nécessité de bivouaquer en plein air, avec mon sac pour oreiller et mon chien pour sentinelle, était un accident qui ne pouvait que m'amuser. Ayant confié mon fusil à Ponto, je continuai donc à errer tout à mon aise, jusqu'à ce que enfin, comme je commençais à examiner si les nombreuses petites percées qui s'ouvraient çà et là étaient réellement des chemins, je fusse conduit par la plus invitante de toutes dans une incontestable route carrossable. Il n'y avait pas à s'y méprendre. Des traces de roues légères étaient évidentes; et, quoique les hauts arbustes et les broussailles excessivement accrues se rejoignissent par le haut, il n'y avait en bas aucune espèce d'obstacle, même pour le passage d'un chariot des montagnes de la Virginie, le véhicule le plus orgueilleux de son espèce que je connaisse. Cependant la route, sauf par ce fait qu'elle traversait le bois (si le mot bois n'est pas trop important pour peindre un tel assemblage d'arbustes), et qu'elle gardait des traces évidentes de roues, ne ressemblait à aucune route que j'eusse connue jusqu'alors. Les traces dont je parle n'étaient que faiblement visibles, ayant été imprimées sur une surface solide, mais doucement humectée et qui ressemblait particulièrement à du velours vert de Gênes. C'était évidemment du gazon, mais du gazon comme nous n'en voyons guère qu'en Angleterre, aussi court, aussi épais, aussi uni et aussi brillant de couleur. Pas un seul empêchement ne se laissait voir dans le sillon de la roue; pas un fragment de bois, pas un brin de branche morte. Les pierres qui autrefois obstruaient la voie avaient été soigneusement placées, non pas jetées, le long des deux côtés du chemin, de manière à en marquer le lit avec une sorte de précision négligée tout à fait pittoresque. Des bouquets de fleurs sauvages s'élançaient partout, dans les intervalles, avec exubérance.
