Jules Verne, ou Jules Gabriel Verne sous son nom de naissance, né le 8 février 1828 à Nantes et mort le 24 mars 1905 à Amiens, est un écrivain français dont l'oeuvre est, pour la plus grande partie, constituée de romans d'aventures utilisant les progrès scientifiques propres au XIXe siècle.Bien que commençant dans les Lettres comme auteur dramatique, il obtient le succès dès 1863 lorsque paraît chez l'éditeur Pierre-Jules Hetzel (1814-1886) son premier roman, Cinq semaines en ballon. Celui-ci connaît un très grand succès y compris à l'étranger. À partir des Aventures du capitaine Hatteras, ses romans entreront dans le cadre des Voyages extraordinaires, qui compteront 62 romans et 18 nouvelles et paraîtront pour une partie d'entre eux dans la revue destinée à la jeunesse: le Magasin d'éducation et de récréation mais aussi dans la presse littéraire pour adultes (Le Temps - Le Tour du monde en quatre-vingts jours, Le Rayon vert, Journal des débats - De la Terre à la Lune...).Les intrigues des romans de Jules Verne - toujours richement documentés - se déroulent généralement au cours de la deuxième moitié du XIXe siècle, prenant en compte les technologies disponibles à l'époque (Les Enfants du capitaine Grant (1868), Le Tour du monde en quatre-vingts jours (1873), Michel Strogoff (1876), L'Étoile du sud (1884), etc.) mais aussi d'autres non encore maîtrisées ou plus fantaisistes (De la Terre à la Lune (1865), Vingt mille lieues sous les mers (1870), Robur le Conquérant (1886), etc.).Extrait: Le 24 février 1793, la Convention nationale décréta une levée supplémentaire de trois cent mille hommes pour résister à la coalition étrangère; le 10 mars suivant, le tirage des conscrits devait avoir lieu à Saint-Florent, en Anjou, pour le contingent de cette commune. Ni la proscription des nobles, ni la mort de Louis XVI n'avaient pu émouvoir les paysans de l'Ouest; mais la dispersion de leurs prêtres, la violation de leurs églises, l'intronisation des curés assermentés dans les paroisses, et enfin cette dernière mesure de la conscription, les poussèrent à bout. - Puisqu'il faut mourir, mourons chez nous ! s'écrièrent-ils. Ce jour-là, la guerre de Vendée venait de commencer; le noyau de l'armée catholique et royale se formait sous la direction du voiturier Cathelineau et du garde-chasse Stofflet. Le 14 mars, la petite troupe s'empara du château de Jallais, défendu par les soldats du 84e et par la garde nationale de Charonnes. Là, fut enlevé aux républicains ce premier canon de l'armée catholique, qui fut baptisé le Missionnaire.
