About the Book

Jeanne de Valois, comtesse de la Motte, descendante d'Henri III, vit dans la misère jusqu'à ce qu'elle obtienne, à force de sollicitations, la protection de Marie-Antoinette, reine de France, et du cardinal Louis de Rohan. La reine déteste le cardinal de Rohan alors que celui-ci n'a qu'une envie: lui plaire.

La comtesse de la Motte, admise dans l'entourage de la reine, découvre que celle-ci a très envie d'un magnifique collier de diamant mais qu'elle n'ose l'acheter, vu la pauvreté des finances de l'Etat. L'ambitieuse comtesse persuade le cardinal de Rohan qu'offrir ce collier à la reine serait pour lui le moyen de rentrer en grâce auprès d'elle. Il est vrai que Marie-Antoinette, flattée, accepte le bijou mais s'engage à le payer elle-même aux joailliers.

Seulement, à la première échéance, le roi refuse de lui donner l'argent et le cardinal, appelé au secours, se trouve démuni suite au remboursement d'une dette au comte de Cagliostro (alias Joseph Balsamo). La reine n'a plus le choix, elle doit restituer le collier aux joailliers.

Elle délègue alors cette tâche à la comtesse de la Motte qui profite de cette confiance pour garder le collier et faire en sorte, à l'aide d'un faussaire en écriture, que la reine et le cardinal ne s'en préoccupent plus. Elle va même abuser le cardinal en lui faisant croire qu'il a enfin obtenu l'amour de la reine en substituant à celle-ci son sosie, une demoiselle Oliva (qui n'est autre que Nicole Legay, l'ancienne femme de chambre d'Andrée de Taverney - voir Joseph Balsamo) que le comte de Cagliostro a mis sur le chemin de la comtesse pour servir ses desseins.

Mais bientôt les rumeurs des frasques de la reine s'intensifient: elle a été vue en transes chez le magnétiseur Mesmer, puis au bal de l'opéra, puis en pleine nuit dans les jardins du palais avec un homme. Etait-ce Philippe de Taverney (qui l'aime, mais voit avec désespoir son rival gagner le coeur de la reine), le comte Olivier de Charny (que l'on sait favori et qui est aimé de la reine), le cardinal de Rohan? En outre, la reine doit répondre au roi de l'accusation de vol du collier, dont le scandale éclate quand les joailliers, inquiets, en demandent le paiement.

Furieux de la disparition de la comtesse de la Motte, Louis XVI fait emprisonner le cardinal de Rohan. Bien que l'arrestation de la comtesse, puis d'Oliva, permette d'innocenter Marie-Antoinette, le procès de l'affaire entame encore sa popularité et la discrédite un peu plus. De plus, surprise par le roi avec le comte de Charny à ses genoux, la reine ne se sort de cette situation compromettante qu'en prétextant une demande en mariage du comte pour son ancienne suivante Andrée de Taverney retirée dans un couvent. C'est ainsi qu'Andrée épouse en toute connaissance de cause le comte Olivier de Charny dont elle est amoureuse, ce que la reine découvre non sans inquiétude, tandis que son frère Philippe, malheureux dans son amour pour la reine et compatissant à la souffrance de sa soeur, quitte la France.
