  1. Souvent j'ai jeté un appel d'alarme vers mes amis inconnus pour qu'ils m'aident à secourir des détresses humaines, et toujours ils ont entendu ma voix. Aujourd'hui il s'agit de secourir des arbres, de nos vieux chênes de France que la barbarie industrielle s'acharne partout à détruire, et je viens implorer: Qui veut sauver de la mort une forêt, avec son château féodal campé au milieu, une forêt dont personne ne sait plus l'âge ? Cette forêt-là, j'y ai vécu douze années de mon enfance et de ma prime jeunesse; tous ses rochers me connaissaient, et tous ses chênes centenaires et toutes ses mousses. Le domaine appartenait alors à un vieillard qui n'y venait jamais, vivait cloîtré ailleurs, et qu'en ce temps-là je me représentais comme une sorte d'invisible personnage de légende.

Le château restait livré à un régisseur, campagnard solitaire et un peu farouche, qui n'ouvrait la porte à personne; on ne visitait pas, on n'entrait pas; j'ignorais ce que pouvaient cacher les hautes façades closes et ne regardais que de loin les grandes tours; mes promenades d'enfant en forêt s'arrêtaient au pied des terrasses moussues, enveloppées de la nuit verte des arbres et de leur silence.

Ensuite, je m'en suis allé courir par toute la Terre, mais le château fermé et ses chênaies profondes hantaient mon imagination toujours; entre mes longs voyages, je revenais comme un pèlerin ramené pieusement par le souvenir, me disant chaque fois que rien des lointains pays n'était plus reposant ni plus beau que ce coin si ignoré de notre Saintonge. Le lieu du reste se maintenait immuable: aux mêmes tournants des bois, entre les mêmes rochers, je retrouvais les mêmes graminées fines, les mêmes fleurettes exquises et rares; dans les clairières, sur les tapis des lichens jamais foulés, je voyais, çà et là, comme autrefois, pareilles à des turquoises, les petites plumes bleues tombées de l'aile des geais; dans les fourrés, les renards en maraude poussaient leurs mêmes glapissements du soir. Rien ne changeait; seulement les mousses épaississaient leurs velours sur les marches des perrons, les capillaires délicats gagnaient lentement les terrasses, et, dans les marais d'en bas, les fougères d'eau se faisaient plus géantes.Or cette situation de délaissement, invraisemblable à notre époque utilitaire, s'était prolongée plus d'un demi-siècle, et on se disait que ce sommeil du château peut-être durerait longtemps encore, comme il arriva pour celui de la Belle-au-Bois-Dormant. Mais voici que le vieillard invisible vient de mourir, rassasié de jours; ses héritiers vont vendre le domaine enchanté, et des coupeurs de forêts sont là prêts à acheter pour abattre: songez donc, il y aurait deux cent mille francs de bois réalisables tout de suite, et la terre resterait !
  4. Avec quelle mélancolie, l'autre jour, un après-midi de fin d'été, je suis revenu là faire un pèlerinage qui pourrait bien être le dernier ! L'un des nouveaux héritiers - jusqu'alors un inconnu pour moi, - averti de ma visite, avait eu la bonne grâce de me précéder pour me recevoir. Mais je voulais d'abord être seul, et, laissant ma voiture à une demi-lieue du château, en familier de ces bois, je me suis glissé par d'étroits sentiers dans le ravin où j'avais eu, au temps de mon enfance, mes visions les plus passionnées de nature et d'exotisme...
