En pleine nuit, en plein hiver, en pleine guerre, naît une petite chienne.
Freda est la fidèle mascotte porte-bonheur d'un jeune soldat très brave appelé Simon pendant la Première Guerre mondiale. Avant de partir pour la guerre, Simon rencontre Lucie, une jeune fille qui n'a pas les moyens de garder sa petite chienne et qui la lui offre. Simon promet à Lucie de prendre bien soin de Freda. Sur le front Ouest, il combat les explosions en rêvant du jour où Freda et lui pourront enfin rentrer à la maison.
Freda was the loyal, good-luck mascot for a brave young soldier named Simon during the First World War. Before leaving for Europe, he met a girl by the name of Lucie who was giving away a puppy her family couldn't afford to feed. Promising to take good care of her, Simon traveled to the trenches with Freda and corresponded with Lucie as often as he could. As he battled explosions on the Western Front, Simon dreamed of the day they would return home and be reunited with Lucie.
