Paul Féval est un écrivain français, né le 29 septembre 1816 à Rennes[1] et mort le 7 mars 1887 à Paris 7e. Son oeuvre, composée de plus de 200 volumes dont de nombreux romans populaires édités en feuilleton, eut un succès considérable de son vivant, égalant celle d'Honoré de Balzac et d'Alexandre Dumas. Les jeunes années Paul Henry Corentin Féval naît le 29 septembre 1816 à trois heures et demie du soir dans l'hôtel de Blossac, rue du Four-du-Chapitre à Rennes. Son père, royaliste et chrétien, originaire de Troyes appartient à la petite magistrature, il est conseiller à la cour royale de la ville. Sa mère, Jeanne-Joséphine-Renée Le Baron, est Bretonne de la région de Redon, et petite-fille du jurisconsulte Henri François Potier de La Germondaye. La famille est nombreuse (cinq enfants) et les revenus sont insuffisants. En 1826, à l'âge de 10 ans, Paul entre comme interne au collège royal de Rennes (aujourd'hui, lycée Émile-Zola). Son père meurt l'année suivante. En troisième, au plus fort des troubles révolutionnaires de 1830, il affiche au collège des opinions monarchistes, déclenche des bagarres. Le proviseur le prie d'aller se calmer à la campagne. Il passe quelques mois chez son oncle, le comte Auguste de Foucher de Careil, au château de la Forêt-Neuve, en Glénac. Le séjour va le marquer profondément. Des conspirateurs s'assemblent la nuit au château, on fond des balles. Paul laisse son imagination s'enfiévrer, il ne rêve que batailles et massacres. Il entend des légendes macabres à la veillée, parcourt les landes, erre entre les marais, s'enfonce dans les brouillards, recueille des récits de la bouche d'anciens chouans de 1793... Il revient à Rennes en janvier 1831, et entre en classe de seconde. Il obtient son diplôme de bachelier en 1833 EXTRAIT: I La fontaine Saint-Julien. Le soleil descendait à l'horizon derrière les cimes de la Sierra de Gredos; c'était le soir d'une journée étouffante, au mois de juin, en l'année 1809. La plaine fertile qui s'étend du pied des montagnes au cours du fleuve présentait un aspect désolé; aussi loin que l'oeil pouvait se porter, toutes les terres étaient en friche et ressemblaient à une lande incendiée. Deux lignes de verdure, le Tietar au sud, l'Alberche au sud-est, fermaient cependant l'horizon aride, indiquant le passage des deux rivières qui serpentent avec lenteur et vont porter au Tage leurs eaux, richesse de la contrée. Il y avait foule autour de la fontaine de Saint-Julien-de-Cabanil, qui forme une oasis ombragée de grands arbres entre Monbeltran et le petit village de Saint-Jacques-sous-Cabanil, dans la partie la plus occidentale de la Vieille-Castille; on avait entendu, depuis midi, une fusillade très-vive, engagée dans la direction de Plasencia, et quelques curieux, éclaireurs de la politique villageoise, avaient couru chercher des nouvelles. La foule, rassemblée autour de la fontaine, était composée de campagnards des deux sexes et de tout âge, auxquels se mêlaient quelques tonsurés et aussi quelques bons gaillards, portant sous leurs manteaux bruns les costumes divers et presque tous pittoresques des provinces du centre: paysans, muletiers, artisans, contrebandiers de la frontière portugaise et même brigands de la Sierra. Pendant l'orage l'homme peut, dit-on, se coucher impunément entre le lion et le tigre: le serpent à sonnettes lui-même perd le besoin de mordre durant les grandes convulsions de la nature tropicale: ainsi en était-il à l'heure suprême de cette crise où se tordait l'Espagne. Les inimitiés sommeillaient, la vengeance était morte, toute haine qui n'était pas celle de l'étranger disparaissait avec toute crainte qui n'était pas celle de l'ennemi. D'un bout à l'autre de la Péninsule, comme ici, au bord de la Fuente de San Julian de Cabanil, le prêtre coudoyait le bandit, et le villageois fanatique s'asseyait auprès du gitano excom
