About the Book

La signora Irmis Barret Popoff incontrò P. D. Ouspensky durante una conferenza nel 1941, e subito cominciò a lavorare con lui, divenendo infine sua segretaria. Prese molti appunti durante questo periodo che successivamente furono approvati da Ouspensky. Dopo la morte del signor Ouspensky, nel 1947, incontrò e lavorò con il signor Gurdjieff stesso. Negli anni successivi, la signora Popoff lavorò anche con Lord Pentland, Madame de Salzmann, John Bennett e Michel de Salzmann. Alla fine degli anni '60 e all'inizio degli anni '70, Madame de Hartmann la incoraggiò a scrivere delle sue esperienze con Gurdjieff e Ouspensky, e lavorare con il numero crescente di giovani che si avvicinavano al Lavoro. "Poco prima di morire, Pyotr D. Ouspensky disse agli alunni che erano al suo fianco che stava abbandonando il "Sistema" che aveva insegnato a loro e ad altri; e che ciascuno avrebbe dovuto dimenticare tutto nel modo in cui lo aveva sentito e poi cercare di ricostruirlo come lo aveva inteso personalmente, partendo dall'inizio.
