Dem diplomierten Arzt Arthur Conan Doyle (1859-1930) gelang gegen Ende des 19. Jahrhunderts die Etablierung eines Genres, das bis heute nichts an Lebenskraft und Faszination eingebüßt hat: Ohne die insgesamt vier Romane und 56 Erzählungen um den Meisterdetektiv Sherlock Holmes ist die moderne Detektivliteratur kaum vorstellbar. Überdies schuf er mit Sherlock Holmes und Dr. Watson zwei Figuren, die über die Jahrzehnte hinweg weit aus ihrem literarischen Kontext heraustraten und ein eigenständiges mythologisches Potential entwickelten, das nicht zuletzt in zahlreichen Parodien und Nachahmungen Ausdruck findet. Es ist ein Kennzeichen von Werken der Gattung der Populärliteratur, ein vorgegebenes Schema innerhalb bestimmter Grenzen zu variieren und mehr oder weniger erfolgreich einem neuen kulturellen Kontext anzupassen. Dies trifft auch auf Laurie R. Kings Abwandlung der Sherlock-Holmes-Erzählungen zu. In "The Beekeeper`s Apprentice or On the Segregation of the Queen" (1994) stellt sie die junge Mary Russell an die Seite des mittlerweile als Bienenzüchter im englischen East Sussex lebenden Sherlock Holmes und bricht damit das Tabu in der Figurengestaltung des Meisters der Deduktion, um das sich die meisten Mythen ranken: Der einzelgängerische Holmes verliebt sich in eine Frau, die um einige Jahre jünger ist als er selbst, ihm jedoch an Intelligenz und Scharfsinn in keiner Weise nachsteht. Die vorliegende Arbeit untersucht am Beispiel von "The Beekeeper`s Apprentice" intertextuelle Bezüge zu den Sherlock-Holmes-Erzählungen Arthur Conan Doyles und rückt dadurch Möglichkeiten der modernen englischsprachigen Populärliteratur, sich des Erbes der "klassischen" britischen Detektivliteratur zu versichern, in den Blickpunkt.
