About the Book

This book is designed as a participant guide for those using process mapping to improve work processes. In this book you will learn the definition of Lean, understand the importance of value to the customer, and identify the nine types of common work wastes that exist within any work environment. It provides direction for mapping your current process and examples of Lean tools for help in making process improvements. You will be given directions for mapping your Future State and how to create an Action Register to guide implementation of your improvements. In addition, it also provides tips on how to make your improvement project a success.
About the Author: Bonnie Slykhuis is a Lean Consultant for Des Moines Area Community College (DMACC) in Ankeny, Iowa. She holds a B.A. in Biology and Secondary Education from Central College and a M.S. in Training & Development from Drake University. Bonnie is responsible for implementing Lean initiatives throughout DMACC's six campuses and providing training and consulting services to external manufacturing, service, government and education clients. She is a certified Master Trainer for workplacelean(R) (office lean) and a certified trainer for NIST/MEP Lean (manufacturing lean). She's conducted over 900 Lean sessions for more than 150 organizations nationally and developed much of the workplacelean(R) training curriculum. She is also a certified instructor for leadership and soft skills programs such as MBTI (Myers-Briggs Type Indicator), DDI (Developmental Dimensions International), Achieve Global and Logic Opera. Prior to DMACC Bonnie was a K-12 educator and spent 12 years in manufacturing working for Pella Corporation, 3M Company and Maytag Corporation in the areas of production, safety, training, organizational development, and supervision. She also owned and operated her own small manufacturing business for 4 years. Collect Saylor is retired from DMACC and One Source Training. As Executive Director of One Source Training she initiated the collaboration of Iowa Community College trainers for development of the workplacelean Pillars and Launch training modules. Gretchen Brink is retired but was intricate in development of the original materials as an employee of DMACC and One Source Training. Janet Drake is retired from DMACC and a former nurse. As a Lean healthcare and workplacelean trainer she helped revise and expand the original workplacelean curriculum. Emily Betz is a Process Improvement & Technology Coordinator at DMACC. She holds a B.A. from Central College and an M.A. from SUNY Stony Brook. Emily is a certified workplacelean(R) trainer, helping clients evaluate and improve work processes across Iowa and nationally. She is also provides Microsoft SharePoint(R) training and consulting services to departments wanting to transition to an electronic document management system. Emily's past experience includes teaching art and English in Germany and France, and specific work experience in translation, web design, International Sales, payroll, hiring, and student services.
