James Marvelle has been blasting poetry through pens into notebooks since his birth in 1949. He kept delicate track of every life he encountered between here and there with detail, humor, pathos, and whatever else flew freely. James was taught the joy of nursery rhymes from his earliest moments, and continues that childhood joy by sharing the songs he writes with everyone.
I have had the privilege of reading his work, singing his songs, and publishing several of his chapbooks since the 197s. I know from experience that his work touches the hearts of readers. I believe the reason to be simple - James reaches through the depths of his heart to discover lasting words to fill his notebooks. - r soos
About the Author
I was born in Newport, RI May 17, 1949.
I graduated high school from Rogers High School 1968
I graduated from Boston University 1972
I grew up with my two sisters, Linda And Paula, in the public housing project, Park Holm, in the north part of Newport--there I enjoyed basketball, baseball, and football with all my friends--lasting many years. I also boxed at the Boys and Girls Club located on our housing grounds. We had dances there and spun our 45s! and there were books. One of my grandmothers, Katherine with her sister Julia, came from County Cork, Ireland. I always remember Nana Kate picking at a lamb or ham on her kitchen table with her quick sense of humor. I wouldnt call it the blarney but it was definitely the brogue, and and she affixed nicknames to everything! Never underestimate the power of Grandmas.
I enjoyed the time there.
Living for the most part here in Rhode Island, I have spent some time in California, New Hampshire, & most recently, in Georgia, where we plan to go to be near two of our grandchildren, Nova and Bodhi.
I have loved poetry nearly my entire life--I would say circa Third Grade. Before that if you are wise enough to count Nursery Rhyme as poetry.
I recall early on grandparents giving me these little books that fit into the palm of my hand--Wordsworth and Longfellow and so many others. I loved all Romantic poets, metaphysical poets, Shakespeares Sonnets, Coleridge, Eliot, Ferlinghetti, Haiku. I spent a lot of time in old bookstores thumbing through pages of poetry--admiring their words, couplets, meter, and rhyme. Are we ever worthy?
I have been living in northwestern RI in Pascoag On Echo Lake with my partner, Mary Ellen and our beloved Yorkies And Maltese; Sonny, Luke, Sophie, and Emma. I enjoy walking in the woods and around the villages of Burrillville. It brings me peace and tranquility. We will be leaving here this year but will not forget the kindness of friends and acquaintances.
Would be amiss to not mention John Donne as a favorite of mine. Hes an amazing and very interesting Poet.
I guess I could go on forever in these antiquities! Stop me. Lol!
Hope all is well with you all.
