About the Book

It is a compilation of my late beloved, devout spouse, John Anthony Payne's writings. As he wrote: these have "been written to convey what I see to be going on in human affairs, under the Providence of God, in the ebb and flow of the spiritual battle. It is composed with a view toward edifying and instructing, as well as toward the affording of enjoyment. The work was conceived as a hybrid of the fiction form and the nonfiction form, in order to achieve the goals which were set for it... intended for those devout Catholics who know that the greatest thing they can do for God is to reach completion in charity. Others too may benefit from reading this who recognize that the human mind can find no reasons to reject any of the tenets of the Catholic Faith and who are therefore seeking to become Catholics. People of good will who have not yet attained to this understanding may profit from exposure to this writing also."
About the Author: John Anthony Payne was born on December 31, 1946 at St. Mary's Hospital in Long Beach, CA. He earned a B.A. with a major in Psychology at the University of California in Los Angeles. After living in West Los Angeles for most of his life where he worked with the Motion Picture Industry for 14 years, during which time he took his Masters while on short leaves from work. He earned an M.A. in Religious Studies at the Notre Dame Apostolic Catechetical Institute in Arlington, VA on July 29, 1988. In August 1996, he began formation as a Benedictine monk at Prince of Peace Abbey in Oceanside, CA but God has the best of plans. He was accepted at the Holy Apostles Seminary in New York, taught Grade 7, a year after which he came back to California, chose the contemplative Secular Carmelite spirituality, and by God's Will and grace, got married at St Philomena Catholic Church in Carson City, CA on the Feastday of St Catherine of Siena on April 29, 2006. Deo gratias. He lived in Redondo Beach, CA thereafter. On June 3, 2011, during his break while on Metro Bus 344 at Palos Verdes, CA he tripped on his workbag. He had femur metallurgical surgery, eight weeks after which he had an unaligned infected and swollen femur then a diagnosis of metastatic cancer. Nine days after. Fr. Jim Kavanagh, Pastor Emeritus at St James' Catholic Church in Redondo Beach, CA heard his last confession and gave him the Holy Viaticum. On August 20, 2011, as we prayed the Holy Rosary, his last words were "Joyce, I'm going to Heaven." His grave is at the Shrine of the Unborn in Holy Cross Cemetery at Culver City, CA [his soul is in Heaven now as God granted me signs that he was]. His articles have appeared in the North American Voice of Fatima, 1990, Homilectic and Pastoral Review, and Social Justice Review. 1992, and OCDS Newsletter Alhambra Community, 2007-2009.
