About the Book

Sex, lies, conflicts of interest, international intrigue and a double-cross of thousands of union employees in the heart of America. Add to that three major companies' futures on the line and an assassination by anarchist terrorists in Paris of one of the company's chairman, in front of his screaming daughter, that almost kills a deal to save at least two of the companies. Hollywood? No. This was real. "The Last American CEO" is the ultimate insider's view of one of the biggest global business deals in history - Chrysler's 1987 purchase of American Motors (AMC) from French automaker Renault. Relevant today? The jewel of the acquisition was Chrysler acquiring the Jeep brand, which almost single-handily saved Chrysler from near-bankruptcy in the early 1990s and certainly allowed Chrysler to survive a real bankruptcy in 2009. Joe Cappy was the last CEO of AMC and Jason Vines became his PR guy and later the PR chief for Nissan, then Ford and later Chrysler, all during times of turmoil.

About the Author: Jason Vines, 56, is an independent communications consultant and author. In late 2014 Waldorf Publishing released his first book "What Did Jesus Drive? -- Crisis PR in Cars, Computers and Christianity" to critical acclaim. Vines followed that with the hilarious compilation of his satirical posts on the Detroit News' political website in "Jimmy Hoffa Called My Mom a Bitch! Profiles in Stupidity" in 2015.Vines served as the top communications professional for three automakers between 1998 and 2007. He was named "Top PR Professional" in the auto industry in 1999, 2005 and 2006 by Automotive News, the industry's lead trade publication. He is credited with leading some of the most memorable product launches in the industry including the Chrysler 300, Jeep Grand Cherokee, Dodge Viper and reborn Nissan 350Z. Vines also was the communications chief during some of the biggest crises in automotive history, including claims of sudden unintended acceleration in Jeep vehicles, a Nissan Motor Corporation on the brink of bankruptcy and, the perhaps the granddaddy of all business crises, the Ford/Firestone tire crisis in 2000 and 2001.Joseph E. Cappy, 82, was the last President and CEO of American Motors Corporation (AMC) before the company was acquired by Chrysler Corporation in 1987. Before he joined AMC, he was a rising star at Ford Motor Company.Under Cappy's leadership, American Motors changed the entire automotive landscape with the introduction of the two-door and four-door 1984 Jeep Cherokee, a compact SUV that took the market by storm. Cappy also oversaw the development and launch the most consider the quintessential Jeep, the Wrangler, a descendent of original World War II military Jeep.
