Las figuras histórico-mitológicas de Ifigenia, Helena y Electra han dado lugar a muchísimas óperas (57, 20 y 15, respectivamente..., de momento), pero es que la primera era todo dulzura e inocencia (esto es, una heroína perfecta para el género "dramático-musical" según los cánones decimonónicos), la segunda fue, según se dice, la mujer más hermosa de la Antigüedad y por su causa murieron generaciones enteras de griegos y troyanos, mientras que su sobrina Electra, en la sublimación de su amor por el padre, ha quedado desde Jung como el paradigma del resorte psicológico que explica la madurez de la mujer. Lo que sigue sin estar claro es por qué Clitemestra (madre de Ifigenia y Electra, hermana de Helena) no ha merecido mejor suerte más allá de su rol secundario como amante despechada y asesina de esposos, algo de lo que no escasea precisamente la historia de la ópera, por cierto, ya que sólo se han compuesto siete óperas sobre ella como protagonista principal (hasta su hijo Orestes, tan soso él, tiene más: 25). En este trabajo vamos a intentar explicar por qué y cómo Clitemestra llegó (y en qué condiciones) a los grandes trágicos de la Atenas de los siglos VI y V a.C. (Esquilo, Sófocles y Eurípides), en los cuales como mito literario adquirió el perfil y todas las connotaciones dramáticas con las que ahora la conocemos, pese a que (dato relevante éste) no tenemos constancia textual de que entre las cientos y cientos de obras que éstos compusieron hubiese alguna con el específico título de Clitemestra (aunque parece que existió alguna, al menos en el caso de Sófocles). No es relevante ahora si Clitemestra existió o no en realidad, sino si la veracidad de su historia mítica es exigible a una tradición que se remonta en la mayoría de los casos a acontecimientos históricos tan lejanos que se pierden en la noche de los tiempos. En su poliformidad o carácter abierto (pues nunca lo encontramos totalmente definido) y en su atemporalidad (pues cambia a lo largo de la historia), el personaje de Clitemestra posee todas las características del mito clásico tal y como hoy lo entendemos, esto es, como micro-conjunto o sustrato reelaborado de una serie de relatos e interpretaciones que se prolonga a lo largo de varios siglos. Clitemestra no es un personaje fijo e inmutable que se acomode a una lectura lineal: sus vicisitudes son tan variadas y admiten tantas opiniones que, junto al resto de las figuras de su entorno familiar, podemos decir que ha quedado como el paradigma de una serie de truculencias vitales que nunca han perdido su actualidad, como el adulterio, el matricidio y el asesinato dentro del matrimonio. Precisamente por lo que tiene de "símbolo", hemos intentado analizar el mito de Clitemestra más allá de la linealidad de los hechos dramatizados por los distintos autores, situándolo con sus diferentes realizaciones o transformaciones de acuerdo con la concepción y la intención de cada autor al recrear la leyenda en el marco de su género. Para terminar, ilustraremos de una manera específica la pervivencia posterior de nuestro mito en dos óperas italianas que nos han llegado (la de Salfi/Zingarelli y la de Pizzetti/Pizzetti), lo que nos va a permitir situar la cuestión en su justa perspectiva histórica.
