He aqui la historia del retorno de los judios a Espana novelada por un testigo de excepcion: Rafael Cansinos Assens. Hoy hay en nuestro pais casi cuarenta mil almas judias. En 1904, cuando arrancan los acontecimientos narrados en «Las luminarias de Januca» los hebreos en Madrid se podian contar con los dedos de una mano. La labor del senador Angel Pulido para establecer lazos con las comunidades sefarditas europeas y del norte de Africa, y los hechos historicos que jalonaron ese retorno a Sefarad son conocidos, pero lo que da interes a esta novela es, por una parte, la intrahistoria intima de unos pocos personajes que jugaron un papel decisivo en aquellos anos en los que el judaismo tenia una renovada vitalidad impulsado por el proyecto de crear un Estado en Palestina y, por otra, la peculiar aventura personal del narrador. Si en «La huelga de los poetas» y en «El movimiento V.P. » seguimos su peripecia vital en el mundo del periodismo y de la vanguardia ultraista respectivamente, estas «Luminarias» nos revelan la experiencia de su judaismo. Cansinos Assens fue un convencido de la transmision genetica de la memoria, como un misterio inexplicable, sin resolver, pero tan cierto como el hecho poetico. Con apenas dieciocho anos, indagando en su pasado familiar, marcado por una fatalidad tenaz, llego a sus raices judias, eligiendo a partir de entonces un destino que ya no abandono nunca en su larga vida. La novela, rigurosamente autobiografica, esclarece por que el judaismo se convirtio en el leitmotiv de su vida y, como contrapunto, se deducen los motivos por los que los judios consideraron, y consideran, a Cansinos Assens como alguien que ha pasado a pertenecerles. La labor del senador Angel Pulido, el antisemitismo endemico del pais, la llegada del primer catedratico de hebreo, el papel de la banca Rothschild, el exilio madrileno del lider sionista Max Nordau, la fundacion de la primera sinagoga, todo ello nos acerca al sentir de una epoca y al pensamiento, contado desde dentro, de los judios que la vivieron. * * * RAFAEL CANSINOS ASSENS (Sevilla, 1882 - Madrid, 1964) es uno de los escritores de referencia de la Edad de la Plata de las Letras y Ciencias Espanolas. Llegado a Madrid en 1898, destaco como animador de las vanguardias, critico literario, traductor, ensayista y autor de una obra propia que hay que enmarcar entre las mas originales del siglo XX. Jorge Luis Borges mostro durante toda su carrera literaria una admiracion ferviente por la obra de quien consideraba su maestro. Depurado despues de la Guerra Civil Espanola bajo la acusacion de ser judio, cayo como literato en un olvido total, aunque acrecento su prestigio como traductor de grandes autores de la literatura universal. Escritor de minorias, la publicacion de sus memorias, «La novela de un literato», en 1982, hoy un clasico de la literatura memorial, marco el inicio del interes de un publico mas amplio por su figura.
