Attribué au stratège Sun Zi (souvent orthographié Sun Tzu) (chinois simplifié 孙子; chinois traditionnel: 孫子; pinyin Sūn Zǐ, littéralement: Maître Sun; souvent appelé Sun Tzu en Occident)
  • le texte s'articule autour de 13 chapitres consacrés à l'analyse rationnelle des différentes dimensions de la guerre et qui dégagent les principes de la poursuite intelligente d'une guerre victorieuse: fondée sur une stratégie indirecte, toute d'économie, de ruse, de connaissance de l'adversaire, d'action psychologique, destinée à ne laisser au choc que le rôle de coup de grâce asséné à un ennemi désemparé.
  • La conception implicite de la guerre, telle qu'envisagée par Sun Zi, s'inscrit dans un monde où celle-ci se pratique au sein d'une même société, la Chine impériale, avec des buts limités et dans le cadre de règles généralement acceptées, avant les invasions barbares qui détermineront la stratégie défensive de la Chine derrière sa Grande muraille.L'Art de la guerre a exercé une influence considérable sur les traditions militaires chinoises et japonaises, et il est toujours enseigné en Chine, à Taïwan et dans l'ensemble des écoles militaires du monde sinisé; il constitue le fondement de la pensée stratégique contemporaine en Asie.L'oeuvre est traduite en 1772 par le père jésuite français Joseph-Marie Amiot et connaît un grand succès avant de tomber dans l'oubli.
  • La traduction en anglais par Lionel Giles en 1910, puis la victoire de Mao Zedong en 1949, ramènent l'attention sur ce manuel de stratégie indirecte. L'Art de la guerre devient un canon de la pensée stratégique occidentale, à son tour profondément influencée par ce traité qui analyse, avec une avance considérable, la guerre comme une affaire d'importance vitale pour les États, pouvant en tant que telle se prêter à une analyse rigoureuse et dont la paix dicte le sens.
  • Afin de nous conformer au plus près des in tentions du texte original, et de faire percevoir à nos lecteurs toutes les subtilités de l'art de la stratégie, nous reproduisons dans cette édition la version originale traduite du chinois ancien en 1772 par Joseph-Marie Amiot.

  • Sun Tzu ou Sun Zi ou Souen Tseu (chinois: 孫子, pinyin: sūn zǐ, Wade-Giles: sun1 tzu3, prononcé /suən.ts̩/, signifie maître Sun ) de son vrai nom Sun Wu (孫武, Sūn Wǔ, sun1 wu3, wǔ signifiant militaire, martial ) est un général chinois du vie siècle av. J.-C. (544-496 av. J.-C.).

  • Les idées de L'Art de la guerre ont été reprises et adaptées par différents auteurs pour la stratégie et notamment la stratégie d'entreprise. Dans un sens plus large, L'Art de la guerre peut être interprété comme une méthode de résolution des conflits.

  • Il est surtout célèbre en tant qu'auteur de l'ouvrage de stratégie militaire le plus ancien connu: L'Art de la guerre. L'idée principale de son oeuvre est que l'objectif de la guerre est de contraindre l'ennemi à abandonner la lutte, y compris sans combat, grâce à la ruse, l'espionnage, une grande mobilité et l'adaptation à la stratégie de l'adversaire. Tous ces moyens doivent ainsi être employés afin de s'assurer une victoire au moindre coût (humain, matériel).
