L'ouvrage est agrémenté d'un grand nombre de gravures.

Charles Baltet (1830-1908) a voué sa vie entière à sa passion l'horticulture. D'abord élève brillant, puis travailleur acharné, il passe autant de temps dans les pépinières à expérimenter des greffes nouvelles que derrière son bureau à écrire des articles et des traités, ou encore à s'investir dans des sociétés horticoles.

On lui doit, avec son frère Ernest, la création de plus d'une centaine de variétés de fruits. Il a par ailleurs lutté activement et avec succès contre le phylloxera, ce puceron qui s'est implanté notamment en France, dès 1866, et qui a ravagé de nombreux vignobles. Sa renommée s'étend même jusqu'au Japon une vigne a été nommée « Baltaï » pour lui rendre hommage. Aujourd'hui encore, ses arrières petits-fils perpétuent le destin familial en oeuvrant comme horticulteurs et pépiniéristes.

Cet ouvrage est donc le travail d'un érudit soucieux de transmettre et de partager ses connaissances autant que son savoir-faire. L'accent est en effet porté aussi bien sur la sélection des greffons obtenus par marcottage ou par semis, que sur les outils idoines qu'il faut avoir et maîtriser (gouges, sécateurs, serpettes à désongletter...), les matières à employer (spargaine, raphias, onguents, mastics...), ou bien encore les étapes à suivre scrupuleusement pour parvenir à une bonne greffe (marcottage, bouturage, repiquage, écimage...). Charles Baltet s'adresse à tous ceux qui entendent maîtriser l'art complexe de la greffe.
