Excerpt from L'Art Chrétien: Son Développement Iconographique des Origines A Nos Jours

Mais surtout les observations que l'on peut ainsi rassembler nous renseignent sur la nature du sentiment religieux et c'est par là que la portée de l'iconographie dépasse dans une certaine mesure celle de l'histoire de l'art. C'est grâce à elle que l'on peut pénétrer dans le domaine mystérieux de la conscience religieuse, dont ces images et ces symboles sont une manifestation indiscutable. Une des scènes les plus familières à l'art chrétien de toutes les époques, celle de la Crucifixion, nous permet de découvrir ainsi les formes diverses qu'a prises le sentiment religieux. A l'origine la représen tation réaliste du Christ sur la croix heurte l'0pinion commune des fidèles on cherche au contraire à transformer le gibet inf-âme en un symbole triomphal la croix est constellée de gemmes, comme celle de Constantin à la voûte du Saint - Sépulcre elle apparait parfois sur les sarcophages du v° siècle, entourée d'une couronne'de lauriers, au milieu de laquelle se détache le monogramme du Christ; les soldats romains endormis à ses pieds montrent qu'il s'agit bien de la Cruci fixion quelquefois mème, comme sur les ampoules de Monza, les deux Iarrons sont figures aux deux côtés d'une croix vide que surmonte le buste du Sauveur; les fidèles ne veulent voir dans cette scène que le triomphe du Christ sur la mort. Plus tard, a partir du Vi siècle, Jésus est étendu sur la croix, mais il a les yeux ouverts, ses pieds reposent sur une sorte de planchette il est entouré des figures sym boliques de l'eglise et de la Synagogue; sa tète est parfois ceinte d'un diadème. La tradition du symbolisme triomphal s'est conservée, mais l'inspiration théologique est prédominante; l'objet de la scène est de représenter d'une manière symbolique et intelligible à tous le dogme fondamental de l'incarnation. Enfin au déclin du XII siècle apparait le Christ réaliste aux côtes décharnées à la téte pendante, les yeux fermés, tandis que le corps est déjeté d une manière lamen table et que les deux pieds sont croisés et cloués l'un sur l'autre. C'est la conception dramatique de la Crucifixion, qui prévaudra dans les temps modernes; il ne s'agit plus de faire réfléchir les croyants mais de les toucher.
