L'Argenis de Jean Barclay fait figure, a bien des egards, d'ouvrage mythique. Ce roman a clefs, publie pour la premiere fois a Paris en 1621, etait, dit la tradition, l'une des lectures favorites du cardinal de Richelieu. Ce fut aussi un grand succes de librairie, et la reputation de l'ouvrage se prolongea au XVIIIeme siecle avec de nouvelles editions - en particulier une nouvelle traduction francaise -, puis se perdit dans la memoire collective jusqu'a nos jours. A la fois roman d'amour, de guerre et d'aventure dans l'esprit du temps, l'Argenis est aussi un texte politique qui affirme l'importance du pouvoir royal, la necessite d'une soumission de tous les sujets au prince, les imperatifs d'une bonne justice et d'une bonne administration, l'urgence enfin de lutter contre les factions et l'esprit de division qui minent la societe et le royaume. Les cinq livres de l'Argenis sont a la fois distrayants et profonds, les types humains qu'il decrit suffisamment dessines pour que joue a plein le mecanisme de l'identification.
