Le moment où ROBESPIERRE, épuisé à la tâche et affaibli à la Convention, cède à la recommandation de son frère, représentant en mission arrivé de NICE le 15 messidor, de faire appel à un général d'artillerie de 24 ans au mérite transcendant, Napoléone BUONAPARTE. Objectif: reprendre l'initiative au Comité de Salut Public où l'Incorruptible joue la chaise vide depuis plusieurs semaines, et face à l'urgence, trouver un sabre pour sauver la Convention montagnarde et ses acquis.Un jour de thermidor de l'an II, chez le menuisier DUPLAY, où l'Incorruptible est logé depuis 1791, et où ne sont admis que ses proches. Introduit par le frère cadet de ROBESPIERRE, Augustin, dit Bonbon: le général BUONAPARTE, commandant l'artillerie à l'armée d'Italie, et supposé encore en mission à Gênes, est pressenti pour remplacer le fidèle HANRIOT, commandant la Garde nationale. Avide de reconnaissance, et, les circonstances aidant, dévoré par une ambition politique naissante, BUONAPARTE est moins tenté par l'idée d'occuper le poste qui fut celui de LA FAYETTE, que de convaincre le soupçonneux ROBESPIERRE, justement en opposition avec CARNOT au Comité de Salut Public sur la conduite des affaires militaires, que l'entrée de nos armées dans le Piémont est dans l'esprit de défense des frontières de la République.... Et lui laisse entrevoir qu'il y a là le moyen de s'imposer face à CARNOT, et ainsi de forcer le destin ....... Mais personne n'aime les missionnaires armés, et la victoire elle-même comporte des dangers, fût-elle acquise au prix d'un effort de guerre sans précédent dans notre Histoire, et aussi décisive que celle de Fleurus, le 10 messidor an II. Pour Maximilien ROBESPIERRE, combattant incessant pour le contrôle des généraux par le pouvoir législatif, le principe du droit naturel universel s'oppose à toute idée de guerre de conquête, et la véritable victoire est d'abord celle que les amis de la liberté remportent sur les factions. L'objectif de la guerre révolutionnaire n'est pas d'émanciper les peuples contre leur volonté, mais d'en finir au plus vite avec le conflit et enfin jouir des bienfaits de la constitution de l'An I de la République, proclamée en présence de l'Etre suprême et mise en sommeil par un gouvernement déclaré révolutionnaire jusqu'à la paix.Cette rencontre imaginaire, même si elle fut voulue par le frère de ROBESPIERRE, ouvre un avenir, encore incertain, à deux acteurs patriotes d'une philosophie de la révolution en action, portés par les courants de pensée de leur temps, et habités, l'un comme l'autre, des valeurs héroïco-civiques de l'an II. Deux voies possibles mais non convergentes pour finir la Révolution. La grandeur est un chemin vers quelque chose qu'on ne connaît pas.......Quelques jours encore et l'Incorruptible montera à l'échafaud au milieu de la liesse générale. Quelques mois encore et BONAPARTE, sabre du représentant BARRAS, sauvera la Convention de l'insurrection royaliste et y gagnera son surnom de général Vendémiaire .....Quatre tableaux pour mettre l'Histoire en théâtre au travers des dialogues de quatre acteurs de la République jacobine!Robespierre au crépuscule de sa vie fait face à Bonaparte à l'aube de sa prodigieuse carrière!
