Als falsch gedeutetes prodigium hat Vergil an dieser Stelle geschickt das Problem der Darstellung der beiden Völker Griechen und Troer gelöst, denn wie sonst können die Griechen nicht hinterhältig und die Troer nicht als blind und einfältig dargestellt werden, als durch ein Götterzeichen, das falsch gedeutet wurde? Trotz Laokoons Warnungen, rhetorischen Fragen und Ausrufen können und wollen die Troer nicht von ihrem Vorhaben, das Pferd in die Stadt zu ziehen, abweichen - geblendet von der sogenannten mens laeva, dass der Krieg nun endlich vorbei ist. Doch wie ist Laokoons Warnrede aufgebaut? Inwieweit und warum stellt Vergil diese Episode ins Zentrum des zweiten Buches? Wie wird die Laokoonszene bei anderen Autoren dargestellt und weshalb nahm Vergil einige Veränderungen vor, die z.T. sogar zu Ungereimtheiten in dem sonst so geschliffenen Werk führen? Die ausgewählte Szene wurde schon oft untersucht und interpretiert; es gibt so viele verschiedene Ansichten, weshalb Vergil die Laokoonszene schildert, wie er es tut und worin er bzw. Aeneas die Ursachen für den Untergang Trojas sah, dass auf den folgenden Seiten nur ein kurzer Abriss der vielfältigen Interpretationsansätze gezeigt und diskutiert werden kann. Insbesondere soll hierbei auf die Ansichten in Erich Bethes "Vergilstudien", Richard Heinzes "Virgils epische Technik", Hermann Kleinknechts "Laokoon" und John P. Lynchs "Loacoön and Sinon" eingegangen werden; spiegeln sie doch alle sehr wichtige und oft gegensätzliche Positionen innerhalb der wissenschaftlichen Erörterung der Laokoonepisode wider.
