Der Untertitel des Romans - die Reise nach Krakau - bezieht sich auf einen jüdischen Witz, in dem es um die "Verrücktheit" menschlicher Perspektiven geht. Der lange Marsch verweist vordergründig auf eine von der Studentenbewegung propagierte Handlungsperspektive, gleichzeitig spielt er in der Welt mystisch-kultischer Verdrehungen unserer christlichen Religion und unseres schuldbeladenen politischen Erbes. Es gibt drei Handlungsebenen: Das Jahr 32 in Jerusalem, das Jahr 1969 in Hamburg, das Jahr 2000 in Hamburg. Auf allen drei Zeitebenen ist der Auslöser für die folgenden Ereignisse ein jeweiliger Streit zwischen 13 Männern: Jesus und seine Jünger, Studenten der sog. 68er-Generation, Akademiker, vor allem Schulleiter. Der zentrale Handlungsstrang ist in der Hamburger Schulbehörde und im Büro des Hamburger Bürgermeisters angesiedelt. Die dramatischen Ereignisse - mehrere angesehene Schulleiter werden ermordet - führen zu Recherchen an verschiedenen Orten: Tempelburg in Pommern (heute Czaplinek in Polen), in Meldorf, in der Barockkirche in Hamburg-Niendorf, vor allem in der Schulbehörde in der Hamburger Straße und in den Räumen des Hamburger Rathaus. Überall verdichtet sich das Bild von unglaublichen Verquickungen von Verbrechen, Geheimbündlereien, Perversionen, Intrigen und Rachsucht. Nur wenige Personen scheinen immun dagegen zu sein, und das sind vor allem drei Frauen. So enden die Handlungsstränge mit der optimistischen Perspektive eines neuen Bundes dieser drei Frauen. Doch im letzten Satz des Romans klingt dessen Brüchigkeit an: keine gute Perspektive.
About the Author: Gottfried Pareigis ist als jüngstes Kind in einem fünfköpfigen Pastorenhaushalt aufgewachsen: in Lunden, einem kleinen Ort in Schleswig-Holstein, in Hamburg und nach der Ernennung seines Vater zum Propst von Süderdithmarschen in Meldorf. Hier machte er 1965 an der Meldorfer Gelehrtenschule sein Abitur, um dann sofort wieder nach Hamburg zurückzukehren. Hier ist er bis heute geblieben: als Student, als Vater von zwei Kindern, als Lehrer und Schulleiter, schließlich als Pensionär. Nach dem Studium der Germanistik und Philosophie und der Promotion in Literaturwissenschaft wurde er Lehrer. Sein politisches Bewusstsein wurde stark geprägt durch die Studentenbewegung, an deren Aktivitäten er gerade im Jahr 1968 teilnahm. In den ersten Jahren seiner Tätigkeit als Schulleiter begann er als Stressbewältigung einen Roman zu schreiben. Der Roman heißt in Anspielung auf den von den 68ern propagierten Marsch durch die Institutionen "Der lange Marsch"
