About the Book

Gaining a fresh perspective helps! Our fast-paced modern lives easily leave us feeling overwhelmed, worried, or burdened. Whether you're unsure about your parenting skills, facing a family challenge, or are spread too thin, learning better coping behaviors and new skills will help you gain awareness of your own strength, and build your parenting tool box. What makes for a good-enough parent? What does conscious and mindful parenting look like? As working parents, what do we need to know to grow smart, and emotionally intelligent children? This book offers a refreshing new perspective on how our daily struggles as parents are predetermined by something much bigger than our child's misbehavior. Therefore, this book is not your typical parenting 101-type book filled with parenting advice about discipline and potty training (as important as those are). Instead, it will challenge you to explore dusty corners long forgotten to parent consciously today. Working mothers are a fact in this day and age. While millions of mothers have joined the job market, and working fathers are taking on the task of child-rearing in ever greater numbers, they still ask: "What will I do with my kids?" 71% of mothers with children under the age of 18 are in the labour force. 64% of those mothers have children under the age of six (U.S. Bureau of Labour Statistics). Our workplace culture, is for the most part, still built on a model that dictates a strict work and home life separation offering working parents few choices, while healthy childhood development demands heavy parental involvement. Skillful and sometimes funny, interspersed with thought-provoking questions and exercises, the author takes us on a journey to come to understand our children's world from a broader perspective. She shows us how their journey is instructed by developmental steps all humans must take. The author encourages us to develop our own parental road map to consciously and mindfully parent today.
About the Author: Gudrun Carstairs trained as a "Socio-pedagogical Educator" in Germany, a field combining social work, counseling, and education. After spending time in Japan, immersing herself into a totally opposite culture, and way of life, she went on to train in Transpersonal Psychology in Hawaii, USA, specializing in cognitive and emotional awareness, and the healing of emotional trauma. She joined the BC Association of Clinical Counsellors in 1991. Mrs. Carstairs is an experienced and dynamic public speaker, seminar leader, consultant, and counselor, specializing into identifying, integrating, and resolving issues in ways not readily recognized as belonging to something much bigger than the child's misbehavior. Her comprehensive experience with individuals and groups developed her current emphasis on the importance and influence of early childhood experiences on cognition and emotions, as predetermining life decisions. In this book, she advocates that good-enough parents are "made" when they learn about the developmental and psycho-emotional world of their children, in addition to acquiring traditional parenting skills. Once parents view the world through the perspective of the child, they can relate with awareness and an open mind and heart, and many of the typical parenting struggles either fall away or take on a new meaning. The insights presented in this book take the reader beyond the confines of socializing their children to "be good and nice", and introduces a refreshing new perspective and approach to the daily struggles of parents with their children. It is not having "lame habits" as parents, but approaching them as a "scary beast" that determines the quality of our parenting. The author summarizes 25 years of counseling experience as someone who has been there, and someone who has been there with others. Gudrun Carstairs owns Carstairs Counseling & Consulting in Honolulu, Hawaii, and Vancouver, Canada, as well as Parental Perspectives, a division of Carstairs Counseling & Consulting, with headquarters in Vancouver, Canada. She has authored Lame Habits of Truly Good People (2008), and is in the process of publishing her third book Conscious Parent, Smart Child, in 2018/19. She has inspired fellow counsellors, professionals from all walks of life, and lay people alike, with her unique ability to identify and integrate issues, situations, and ideas in ways that others may not instinctively see as workable.
