D'abord publiée en feuilleton en 1865 dans le journal Le Pays, où elle passe inaperçue, elle est reprise avec d'importantes modifications en 1866 dans le quotidien Le Soleil et obtient un immense succès. Elle est considérée comme une oeuvre majeure du genre policier.Premier roman policier d'Émile Gaboriau, il est directement inspiré d'une affaire qui défraya la chronique en 1865.Une femme d'une cinquantaine d'années, la veuve Lerouge, est retrouvée sauvagement assassinée dans sa maison. Tous les indices conduisent à un jeune homme de bonne famille: les preuves matérielles sont accablantes. L'assassin paraît tout désigné et l'affaire bouclée, quand le doute s'immisce dans l'esprit de l'un des enquêteurs, le père Tabaret. Certains faits le poussent à envisager le meurtre sous un autre angle, et ses découvertes réserveront bien des surprises aux lecteurs.Inspirée d'une affaire criminelle qui défraya la chronique, L'Affaire Lerouge est le premier roman judiciaire français. Son auteur, Émile Gaboriau, élabore une intrigue policière à la construction astucieuse, doublée d'une histoire amoureuse. Arthur Conan Doyle, autre père du roman policier, était un grand lecteur et admirateur de Gaboriau.
