About the Book

There are thousands of extraordinary people in history, who have accomplished such great feats, it has changed the world. Yet no one knows who they really are.
One such great lady was the eponymous Enid Marjory Collett, of Shoreham's state of the art Tamor Lifeboat.
Enid was a very private person. I am one of the limited people who was privileged to have spent so much time with her relaying her story to me.
The story tells of her privileged childhood in Great Shelford Cambridge where she lived from the age of six years. She passed away peacefully in the same house in the year 2002.
Her introduction to the eccentric Terrance Gray when she became secretary of the Festival Theatre. How this soon blossomed into interpreter and director for him.
Even though, hundreds of visitors are proudly given a tour around The Enid Collett Lifeboat in Sussex, they are unable to share any information about the generous lady who funded it.
Indeed, I was told by Claire Wickes Saunders, when she visited and enquired about her that they knew nothing about her. She did extensive research online, for the RNLI, but all she found out was, that she was a farmer's daughter from Cambridge, who worked in the theatre world.
She told me recently she thinks the RNLI would be very pleased with the information I was able to give.
When I realised that no-one seemed to have a hint of this captivating individual's personality, I felt it was my duty to share the knowledge I had.
The characters of many famous people are lost forever once they have passed away. It seems a great pity that so many gifted personalities, whose name goes down in history are soon
forgotten, other than of course, what they were famous for.
Very often, these ideas are usually left to the imagination. I have often wondered about such things myself.
What were they really like, their Idiosyncrasies, or their habits? What did they look like?
What was their true personality?
Were they friendly, social people, or were they loners?
I want to share with you, Enid Collett's fascinating life story. What led up to the decision she made to fund the Shoreham Tamar lifeboat having no connection with the sea or anything to do with it.
After all she came from a long line of Farmers.
And yet almost all of her estate was left to the RNLI at Shoreham by Sea.
The eponymous Enid Collett, a farmer's daughter, was born in Huntingdonshire at the turn of the century. Most of her life was spent working in the theatre world.
That is probably all you know about the lady who left a legacy of almost 3 million pounds to fund the State of the Art all weather Shoreham Tamar Lifeboat, her namesake The Enid Collett.
In the following pages you will laugh, cry and almost certainly be inspired through her
courage, as I unfold the exclusive enthralling life story of Enid Collett.
