Distintas formas de documentar la identidad individual forman parte de la vida cotidiana en las sociedades contemporáneas. Sin embargo, el registro estatal generalizado de identidades es reciente. A fines del siglo XIX estaba reservado para integrantes de grupos claramente estigmatizados. Este libro constituye el primer aporte a la historia de la identificación en Argentina. Analiza el proceso, sumamente precoz en el contexto internacional, a través del cual se sentaron las bases para un amplio registro de la población. En breves veinticinco años se crearon las primeras Galerías de ladrones; Juan Vucetich desarrolló el Sistema Dactiloscópico Argentino y se implementaron la Cédula de Identidad, el prontuario, el canje internacional de antecedentes y la detención por averiguación de identidad. La legitimidad de las prácticas identificatorias estatales, las tecnologías y los instrumentos burocráticos que se crearon en este período, tuvieron larga influencia durante el siglo XX.

Mercedes García Ferrari es Magíster en Investigación Histórica por la Universidad de San Andrés, donde cursa actualmente el doctorado en Historia. Realizó además estudios de fotografía (NESOP, EE.UU.) y durante algunos años se dedicó profesionalmente a esta actividad. Es docente de la Universidad Nacional de General Sarmiento. Participa en proyectos de investigación sobre prácticas ilegales, policía y cultura en los siglos XIX y XX. Actualmente desarrolla un estudio comparativo sobre identificación en el Río de la Plata gracias a una beca SEPHIS del Instituto Internacional de Historia Social (Países Bajos). Su trabajo sobre el proceso de expansión de sistemas de identificación se ha difundido en artículos y presentaciones en congresos nacionales e internacionales.
