La Ville-Vampire (1875) est le troisième récit vampiral (l'adjectif est de Féval lui-même) de cet auteur prolifique. Après avoir d'abord modernisé la figure du vampire, il s'emploie ici à une parodie de l'écriture de la romancière Ann Radcliffe, employant l'astuce d'un récit-cadre où il est question qu'une confidente de l'écrivaine raconte une histoire entendue auprès d'Ann Radcliff elle-même, qui aurait vécu et été inspirée par cette aventure dans sa future oeuvre narrative. Paul Féval, pour tout effet de réel, rapporte ces propos qu'on lui aurait confiés afin qu'il les publie sous son nom. L'histoire centrale, qui est la principale, commence de manière assez classique par l'enlèvement d'un futur marié (qui est traîné jusqu'en Illirie... où sinon ? Les vampires sont de l'Est, tout le monde le sait...) par un vampire, dit M.Götzi, possédant des caractéristiques assez inhabituelles. Le tout devant aller (mais non finir encore), vers la destruction dudit vampire, on découvre à l'occasion que cette espèce possède sa cité sur Terre.Ce texte est un pastiche, et réussi, mais c'est aussi un bon roman, imaginatif, parfois cocasse, grotesque, échevelé, original, même si le dénouement laisse un peu sur les dents (les canines, tant qu'à faire), ce qui est justement dû à l'aspect parodique de la trame.Les lecteurs en recherche de variations inédites autour de la figure du vampire ne pourront pas être déçus. Poppy Z Brite, la fée de l'absinthe, a peut-être puisé son inextinguible vert dans les lignes de La Ville-Vampire: le vert, c'est la couleur du vampire, celle où baigne l'aventure et qui donne une esthétique surnaturelle. De la chair et des yeux du vampire, en effet, émane une lueur verte, qui va jusqu'à pousser Féval à écrire qu'il ressemble, dans le noir, à une bouteille verte éclairée de l'intérieur.D'autres détails incongrus concernent le vampire: il possède un aiguillon très pointu au bout de la langue, qui lui permet de percer un trou dans la chair; il se colle ensuite comme une sangsue pour aspirer le sang. Il ne peut en principe jamais mourir, mais comme il peut se prendre de super mandales, il a une serrure sur sa poitrine, à hauteur de son coeur, qu'une clé spéciale peut pénétrer afin de remonter le vampire, qui retrouve ainsi une santé de fer. Pour traverser l'eau, il lui suffit de se mettre à plat-dos, les pieds en avant. La cendre de coeur de vampire lui cause un éternuement qui le fait violemment (et fatalement) exploser.Son animal fétiche est l'araignée, mais il peut prendre la forme qu'il souhaite. Mieux, il sait se fondre avec les éléments ou encore peut se dédoubler, à condition de récolter auparavant des victimes-esclaves. En effet, chaque double de lui-même est une de ses anciennes victimes qu'il s'est attachée et à laquelle il peut faire prendre la forme qu'il souhaite, chacune étant un douzième de lui-même. C'est ainsi que M. Götzi, le vampire de l'histoire, fait apparaître dès qu'il le veut: un sale gosse tenant un cerceau, une vieille femme chauve, un perroquet, un chien, qui eux-mêmes ont le pouvoir de se dédoubler, mais qui se fusionnent de nouveau avec le vampire à son signal.
