Quand Baptiste a mis le pied hors de l'aéroport, ce qu'il a vu l'a surpris. C'est comme à la télé, dans les reportages. Ils sont des centaines, collés les uns aux autres, à transpirer dans la chaleur étouffante. Certains sont assis sur le sol, certains adossés à la barrière de sécurité.

Il se retourne vers sa femme, Pénélope, qui sans rien dire semble penser la même chose que lui.

C'est un mélange de couleurs, de style, de tout. Des vieux, des jeunes, des femmes enceintes, des grand-pères, des enfants, des saris de toutes les couleurs, des tissus sales, du coton beige, des chemises... L'odeur lui paraît épouvantable, un mélange de sueur, de pollution, de pétrole. Ça hurle de partout, on s'appelle dans tous les sens:

Il ignore tout ce beau monde, et parcourt la foule du regard. Un homme mince, habillé tout en blanc, porte une pancarte avec son nom. Il s'approche:

- Gopal ?

- Oui, M'sieur. Bonjour, M'sieur Baptiste. M'dame. Je vais prendre vos bagages.

L'homme prend leurs affaires et se fraye un chemin dans la foule. Ils le suivent, dociles, curieux de découvrir ce pays si différent de ce qu'ils connaissent.

On sort des clichés, on sort des beaux palais, on partage l'intimité d'une famille française expatriée pour raisons professionnelles puis on bascule dans la tête du chauffeur indien... Le point de vue de chaque personnage au fil de l'histoire rend passionnante et déroutante la lecture car le choc des cultures se révèle surprenant.

Lecture presque d'une traite, ce livre m'a plongé dans une vie là-bas, on découvre l'inde moderne, telle qu'on ne l'imaginait pas du tout, même en suivant l'actualité. On s'attache aux personnages, on tremble, on espère et désespère, on est tenu jusqu'au bout par cette expérience de vie si différente, un questionnement sur soi également, sur ce qui nous parait normal...
