La vida es sueño es una obra de teatro de Pedro Calderón de la Barca estrenada en 1635 y perteneciente al movimiento literario del barroco. El tema central es la libertad del ser humano para configurar su vida, sin dejarse llevar por un supuesto destino.La concepción de la vida como un sueño es muy antigua, existiendo referencias en el pensamiento hindú, la mística persa, la moral budista, la tradición judeocristiana y la filosofía griega. Por eso ha sido considerada incluso un tópico literario. Según Platón, el hombre vive en un mundo de sueños, de tinieblas, cautivo en una cueva de la que sólo podrá liberarse tendiendo hacia el Bien; únicamente entonces el hombre desistirá de la materia y llegará a la luz. El influjo de esta concepción platónica en la obra es evidente: Segismundo vive al principio dentro de una cárcel, de una caverna, donde permanece en la más completa oscuridad por el desconocimiento de sí mismo; sólo cuando es capaz de saber quién es, consigue el triunfo, la luz. Calderón, muy cabalmente, adoptó la forma del drama filosófico para abordar un gran caudal de temas confluyentes en este foco y en este tópico literario, platónico en su raíz occidental: y Segismundo, príncipe de Polonia, desde su nacimiento vive secretamente preso en una fortaleza entre los montes, sin tener ningún trato con humanos, excepto con Clotaldo, quien le sirve de ayo y custodio. A tal situación lo ha llevado su padre el rey Basilio, docto en astrología, para evitar el cumplimiento de ciertos augurios pronosticándole que un hijo suyo lo derrocaría, hundiendo al país en el caos. Los hechos parecían haber confirmado en parte esta predicción, pues la reina murió al dar a luz a Segismundo. El drama se inicia cuando el príncipe, cubierto de pieles y encadenado como una fiera, en su cautiverio maldice su existencia, anhelando la libertad de que goza hasta la más ínfima criatura de la naturaleza. -De pronto aparece Rosaura, una bellísima joven que, vestida con atuendo masculino, va tras Astolfo, duque de Moscovia y sobrino del rey de Polonia, que la ha seducido y abandonado, para obligarlo a cumplir su promesa de matrimonio. Rosaura escucha compasiva a Segismundo y le habla con ternura y bondad.
