Pero esa misma inocencia parece que la salva, para seguir confiando en ella y encontrar a una amiga, Anja, una enfermera de un centro especial de acogida. Allí ella fortalece su espíritu, ya no trata de justificar el ensañamiento de las personas contra ella, sino que descubre en ella un talento especial para aprender idiomas y lenguas. Un talento que no sabía ni siquiera que tenía. De niñera se convierte en aspirante a traductora y conseguirá con su voluntad propia imponerse en un mundo desafiante, con mujeres y hombres que parecen seres egocéntricos, pero se opera en todos ellos la transformación creativa y el deseo de compartir unidos.
Por otra parte, Tidian es un diplomático curtido por la vida y algo desesperado por la muerte de su mujer en un primer parto. Existe una tentación en él que va minando así su capacidad innata para ayudar a las personas y se va volviendo alguien cerrado a los demás: la pasividad, que le incita a mirar hacia otro lado, a no responsabilizarse de lo que le rodea y a delegar el cuidado de los demás en otras personas, le lleva a postergar algo en lo que supuestamente otros tomarán las decisiones acertadas mejor que él. Pero él no sabe a ciencia cierta qué harán los demás y siempre esperará algo más. Ese algo se impondrá cuando recibe una carta por una falta administrativa y corre peligro su trabajo. Entonces se dará cuenta de su falta de atención, deliberada o accidental, por todo, y de cómo eso ha apagado para siempre su empatía humana. Sin elevación humana el sentimiento de calidez y de emoción se ha apagado en él.
