About the Book

English summary: The German polemicist Ulrich von Hutten wrote De guaiaci medicina et morbo Gallico (On the Guaiac Remedy and the French Disease) in 1521. Von Hutten was better known for his caustic attacks on the Catholic Church and enemies of the emerging idea of a German nation, but wrote this personal testimony to what he considered the healing powers of guaiac wood for syphilis. This short pamphlet, translated here into French, offers a unique perspective on Early Modern medicinal practices through the eyes of a lively and boisterous Humanist of his time.
