«Este poema circular es a la vez un manifiesto y un memorial. Tambien es una letania inscrita en un rosario o molinillo de plegarias. Una letania es un conjuro. Un gesto de la palabra. Quienes la repiten concentran en ella su voluntad, su energia. Los nombres de las especies en extincion irrumpen en la plegaria sin interrumpirla, como espiritus que viniesen a pedirnos ayuda. Al pronunciarlos, sus nombres van inscribiendose en el tiempo; la lista que resulta de ello es la que figuraria en un monumento para la memoria, la de todos los que estamos y los que vendran. La tierra prometida es una estela poetica». La plegaria, o poema circular, es un texto breve, sin significado preciso, que se repite una y otra vez sin mas variaciones. Se extiende por un espacio sin fin, donde pueden verse, aqui y alla, animales sin identificar. Segun el libro avanza, repitiendo la plegaria, estos animales felices y vivos van alternando con huellas y restos de animales... que hacia el final son los unicos presentes, ilustracion del futuro que nos amenaza PROLOGO Este poema circular es a la vez un manifiesto y un memorial. La tierra prometida es una estela poetica. Los nombres de las especies en peligro de extincion que se incluyen son una parte muy pequena del total. La idea hubiese sido incluirlos a todos, pero la cifra es tan alta que hubiesemos necesitado no un volumen sino una biblioteca entera. La lista roja de la IUCN menciona veintiocho mil doscientas setenta y dos especies animales en el ano 2006, de las cuales seiscientos noventa y ocho estan ya extinguidas y mil quinientas veintiocho estan en estado critico. Las demas se consideran amenazadas o muy vulnerables. El libro rojo del Ministerio del Medio Ambiente mencionaba en la peninsula iberica setenta y cinco especies en peligro en el ano 1990; en el 2002 eran ciento sesenta y una. No esta actualizado a la fecha de hoy. La lista del poema podria haber sido muchisimo mas larga si hubiese traduccion al castellano de las muchas especies que solo han sido nombradas en las lenguas vernaculas de donde son originarias. De una gran mayoria, por otra parte, tan solo tenemos el nombre cientifico, o bien porque en las lenguas autoctonas se suele utilizar, para designarlas, cualquier apodo general tipo "pajaro", "serpiente", "pez", "mariposa", etc., o bien simplemente porque tales especies pasan inadvertidas para los seres humanos. Esto es muy evidente en el caso de los insectos. Tan solo en la peninsula iberica se reconocen unas trescientas especies de ortopteros, pero son una realidad diversa unicamente para el especialista. Y es curioso comprobar que, hasta que algo no se nombra, no existe. Todos conocemos al lobo, al leopardo, al elefante, pero ¿quien conoce a la Hesperia dacotae o a la Danaus plexippus? Aquello que no hemos oido nombrar no existe para nosotros, y esto tiene una extrana consecuencia logica: si no existio nunca, ¿como podria extinguirse? Los nombres de las especies no son los nombres de los animales. Estamos hablando de especies, y las especies son conceptos, no individuos concretos. ¿Cuantos animales son los que se mueren cuando una especie desaparece? ¿Cuantos espiritus vendrian a poblar el poema si, como es costumbre en nuestros memoriales humanos, nombrasemos a todos y cada uno de los animales que agonizan? Dejar este libro incompleto proporciona, por otra parte, la posibilidad al lector de que el mismo se adhiera al manifiesto anadiendo los que quiera; de esta manera, escribiremos este poema entre todos. Y bien me temo que, a la velocidad en que el fenomeno se esta produciendo, necesitaremos muchos lectores y muy pocos anos. Cuando no quede una sola especie que anadir, habremos llegado, finalmente, a la Tierra Prometida.
