L'histoire

  • Deux frères jumeaux, Polynice et Etéocle, fruit de l'union incestueuse entre Jocaste leur mère et OEdipe le fils aîné, se vouent une haine fratricide depuis qu'Etéocle a décidé de régner sans partage sur Thèbes. Or leur défunt père avait émis la volonté qu'ils trônent un an chacun à tour de rôle. Dès lors, Thèbes est à feu et à sang et se voit bientôt assiégée par les troupes de Polynice qui souhaite faire valoir le droit du sang pour gouverner la ville alors qu'Etéocle, plébiscité par le peuple et encouragé par son oncle Créon, refuse de rendre le trône à son frère.
  • Créon, qui voit dans la lutte fratricide le moyen de conquérir le pouvoir tant convoité, espère séduire Antigone, leur soeur, qu'il aime secrètement. Jocaste, désespérée par tant de haine cherche à ramener ses fils à la raison, à les faire fléchir et leur demande le temps d'une trêve de se rencontrer. Polynice, accompagné d'Hémon fils de Créon, fidèle cousin combattant aux côtés du prince par amour pour Antigone, pénètre dans la cité. Mais la confrontation physique des deux frères va exacerber leur haine originelle et la trêve sera de courte durée.
  • La Thébaïde est une pièce au rythme tendu et foudroyant à l'image de la haine qu'elle met en scène, une haine au-delà du pouvoir convoité par deux frères jumeaux. Pour l'un, Polynice, le pouvoir est un droit du sang alors que pour l'autre, Etéocle, il est le choix d'un peuple. C'est autour de cette opposition que le conflit entre les frères débute, c'est en elle aussi qu'ils trouvent un prétexte à leur affrontement, mais dès que les jumeaux se retrouvent dans une situation de confrontation physique, l'affrontement politique laisse place aussitôt à une haine charnelle, ancestrale, originelle. Une haine qui prend sa source dès l'origine de leur vie, une haine organique qui perdure par-delà la mort tant elle est absolue, une haine physique qui procure jusqu'à la jouissance tant elle est transcendante. Les jumeaux s'affrontent dans un perpétuel corps à corps s'arrachant l'un à l'autre pour vivre comme pour mourir. Mais la victoire entre deux morts n'a pas de sens (Les Phéniciennes - Euripide) c'est cette idée-force que je souhaite développer, cette notion qu' à partir d'un certain point, il n'y a plus de retour (Kafka).
  • Bien évidemment l'actualité des guerres fait écho aux propos de Racine, car il s'agit de guerre entre frères, où les accords sont trahis, les couvre-feux violés. Mais au-delà, ce qui m'importe dans La Thébaïde, c'est que Racine, en réduisant le mythe au maximum au sein de la famille, crée une sorte d'effet de condensation qui a pour conséquence de réinjecter de l'humain dans le tragique. En effet, c'est avant tout la nature humaine qui est dépeinte ici, affligée de ces sentiments aussi proches dans leur nature qu'opposés dans leur expression que sont l'amour et la haine, portés ici à leur paroxysme puisqu'il s'agit d'amour et de haine filial.
