Un jesuita portugues llega a Japon en la segunda decada del siglo XVII para convertir al cristianismo a los naturales del pais, como poco antes habia hecho san Francisco Javier y otros jesuitas portugueses y espanoles. Veinticuatro anos despues, Cristovao Ferreira abjura de la religion cristiana y escribe este texto en japones, ahora traducido al castellano por primera vez, en el que trata de supercheria a la religion en la que vivio. Junto al texto de Ferreira, se publica en este volumen Dios destruido, otro escrito anticristiano de otro jesuita apostata, el japones Fabian Fukan. «El hecho de que Ferreira se haya visto expuesto de forma tan radical al contacto con una cultura tan diferente como la japonesa le llevo a vislumbrar a principios del siglo XVII algunos de los principales argumentos relativizadores y anticristianos que no llegaran a desarrollarse hasta finales del XVII y principios del XVIII. Por eso, aunque sea una experiencia individual y totalmente excepcional, La supercheria al descubierto puede ser considerada como una obra precursora de la Ilustracion mas radical» (Bernat Castany Prado). Cristovao Ferreira (Torres Vedras, cerca de Lisboa, 1580) nacio el mismo ano en que Espana y Portugal se unieron bajo la corona de Felipe II. A los 16 anos ingreso en la Compania de Jesus. Hizo sus primeros votos en Coimbra y a los 20 marcho a la India (Goa) y a China (Macao). En 1609 llego a Japon, donde enseno latin y aprendio japones en un seminario. Tras el edicto del shogun Tokugawa Hidetada de 1614, en el que se ordenaba de nuevo la expulsion de los jesuitas, vivio veinte anos en la clandestinidad. A los 53 se convirtio en el provincial de toda la region de Japon. En 1633 fue detenido y, tras veintiun dias de tortura, apostato. Se le dio una esposa, con la que tuvo tres hijos, una casa y un sueldo del gobierno japones por traducir documentos del espanol y el portugues. Cambio su nombre por el de Sawano Chuan y en 1636 escribio La supercheria al descubierto. Murio en 1650. Fabian Fukan nacio en Japon en 1565, fue bautizado en 1583 y tomo el nombre de Fabian. Antes de convertirse al cristianismo, quiza fue un monje zen en el monasterio de Eshun. En el colegio jesuita de Amakusa, escribio varias obras para facilitar la predicacion de la doctrina cristiana y tradujo al japones las Fabulas de Esopo. Se convirtio en uno de los principales apologetas del cristianismo. Su apostasia debio tener lugar hacia 1608. En 1620 escribio Dios refutado y murio un ano mas tarde. El autor del extenso epilogo, Bernat Castany Prado (1977) es licenciado en Filosofia y Filologia Hispanica por la Universidad de Barcelona. Se doctoro en Filologia Hispanica con la tesis El escepticismo en la obra de Jorge Luis Borges (Universidad de Barcelona) y en Estudios Culturales con la tesis Literatura posnacional en Hispanoamerica (Georgetown, Washington D. C.). Es autor de los libros Literatura posnacional (Editum, 2007), Que nada se sabe. El escepticismo en la obra de Jorge Luis Borges (Cuadernos de America Sin Nombre, 2012), y el libro de poemas La divina comedia (Renacimiento). Ha traducido a autores como Fontenelle, Morelly o Voltaire, libros que se publicaran en esta coleccion. Actualmente es profesor de Literatura Hispanoamericana y Estudios Literarios en la Universidad de Barcelona.
