E che, soprattutto, lo costringe ad ascoltarla, perché vuole che lui scriva di lei: della sua vita da romanzo...

Quella sarebbe stata una giornata come tutte le altre per Alexandre Dumas, se non fosse stato per una bizzarra vecchia che gli aveva proposto di fargli l'oroscopo dell'anno successivo, il 1844. Dopo i primi convenevoli, infatti, lo scrittore si era accorto che l'indovina non aveva alcuna intenzione di parlargli degli astri, ma che aveva una storia da raccontare, la propria. Per una volta sarebbe stato lui lo spettatore.
Tutto aveva avuto inizio a Modigliana, in Romagna, dove la madre della chiromante, Vincenza, l'aveva data alla luce e l'aveva chiamata Maria Stella. In breve, però, Vincenza si era accorta che l'accenno di chioma scarlatta e i piccoli occhi di cielo della neonata non potevano venire né da lei né da suo marito, entrambi neri come la pece. Quella non era sua figlia.
Ma quando aveva provato a parlare dei suoi sospetti, nessuno le aveva creduto, e Vincenza si era vista costretta a frugare in lungo e in largo la casa, e a chiedere ai vicini; era arrivata addirittura a interrogare il signor Conte. La scoperta sull'origine della bambina era stata sconcertante, ma Vincenza si era confidata solo con la piccola Maria Stella che, dopo tanti anni, aveva deciso di mettere Dumas, il grande scrittore, a parte di uno scandalo che avrebbe potuto minare dalle fondamenta l'intero regno di Francia.
Quella fu una strana giornata per Alexandre Dumas, e la storia che aveva udito sarebbe diventata fonte di ispirazione per uno dei suoi capolavori.

In appendice al libro, un capitolo delle Memorie di Dumas padre, inedito in Italia: il grande scrittore vi racconta la storia vera che è alla base di questo romanzo.
