Voici, en substance, ce qui est rapport� sur ces deux personnages.

Tobie, un pieux Isra�lite de la tribu de Nephthali, observateur fid�le de la loi, fut emmen� ca tif a Ninive, avec Anna, son �pouse, par Salma nasar, roi d'assyrie. Il emeura fid�le au Seigneur pendant sa captivit� et �leva son fils dans la crainte de Dieu. Il trouva gr�ce aupr�s de Salma nasar qui lui donna la libert� d'aller partout o� il voudrait et de faire tout ce que bon lui semblerait. Il ne se servit de cette libert� que pour con soler ses fr�res afflig�s et pour les secourir. Il pr�ta dix talents d'argent � Gabelns de Rag�s, en M�die. Salmanasar �tant mort, son fils et succes scur, Sennach�rib, pers�cuta les Juifs, et Tobie, disgraci�, d�pouill� de tous ses biens, condamn� �. Mort, dut se cacher pour sauver sa vie. Senna ch�rib fut tu� par ses propres enfants, et Tobie put alors rentrer dans sa maison et dans la possession de ses biens, ch. I. Un jour de f�te, ayant invit� � un festin les fid�les de sa tribu, il quitta le repas pour aller ramasser un mort qu'il ensevelit la nuit suivante. Ses voisins lui firent des remontrances sur les dangers auxquels il s'exposait; mais Tobie, sans tenir compte de ces consid�rations continua � ensevelir ceux de sa nation qui avaient �t� tu�s sur les voies publiques, par les Nini'vites. Un jour, fatigu� de sa pieuse besogne, il se coucha le long d'une muraille, et il lui tomba dans les yeux des ordures d'hirondelle qui le rendirent aveugle. Dans cette nouvelle �preuve, il d�ploya une patience et une r�signation i.nalt�rables, que ne purent �branler ni les reproches de sa femme ni ceux de ses amis, qui lui demandaient ironiqu�roent o� �tait le fruit de toutes les oeuvres de mis�ricorde qu'il avait faites, chap. II. Alors voyant qu'il ne pouvait plus servir �. Rien au monde, et qu'il devenait a charge a lui m�me, il s'adressa � Dieu, implora sa mis�ricorde, et le pria de le retirer de cette vie. Dans le m�me temps, Sara, fille de Raguel, qui avait �pous� les uns apr�s les autres, sept maris que le d�mon avait tu�s la nuit des noces, fut outrag�e par une servante de son p�re, qui l'appela meurtri�re de ses maris. Sara se prosterna devant Dieu, et, pendant trois jours, dans leje�ne et dans la pri�re, comme Tobie, elle conjura le Seigneur de la d�livrer de l'opprobre qui l'accablait. La pri�re de Tobie et celle de Sara furent exauc�es, et Dieu envoya � leur secours l'ange Rapha�l, ch. 111 Tobie croyant sa fin prochaine, ainsi qu'il l'avait demand� au Seigneur, donna a son fils ses derniers avis. Il lui retra�a ses devoirs envers sa m�re, lui recommanda l'aum�ne, la chastet�, la sagesse et la pi�t�, l'avertit du pr�t des dix talents fait � Gab�lus de Rag�s, etle chargea d'aller les retirer, ch. IV. Le jeune Tobie ne connaissant ni Gab�lus, ni la ville de Rag�s, se mit � chercher, par ordre de son p�re, un compagnon de route. Il trouva, sans le conna�tre, l'ange Rapha�l, qui, sous la figure d'un jeune voyageur, s'ofirit � le conduire. Tobie alla avertir son p�re, qui pria ce jeune homme d'entrer chez lui. L'ange salua Tobie et lui adressa quelques paroles d'esp�rance touchant sa prochaine r'ison. Tobie lui demanda le nom. De sa famille. Il se nomma Azaria ls du grand Ananias, que Tobie avait connu. Tandis que les' deux voyageurs se mettaient en route, la m�re de Tobie, affiig�e de ce d�part, se mit - � pleurer, ch. V.
